HuffPo (well...): Obama offers Hillary State

lambert's picture

Here.:

Multiple reports have indicated that Clinton was under serious consideration for the nation's top diplomatic post, in addition to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, the Republican Senator from Nebraska.

It's entirely up to Hillary, but if the offer has in fact been made, I hope she doesn't take it:

The biggest foreign policy issues -- Iraq, Afghanistan, global warming -- won't be on her desk anyhow, and I want her in the Senate fighting for HOLC and health care. I'd like to see Truman Commission-style hearings on corruption in Iraq as well.

NOTE Now, Al Gore at State.... That would be something.

Isn't Gore better where he is?

And thinking about it, isn't she better where she is?

SoS is prestigious, but our focus has shifted to domestic policy.

We need her there.

Damon's picture

Just Say No

There are a number of reasons why I think she should say no if offered:

- I personally don't think this is her strong suit. I like her much better on domestic policy than foreign policy.

- I said it after the end of the primaries, but I think she has so much clout and represents a distinct side of the party that she'd effectively lose all that if co-opted by the administration. She'd be better at remaining a force within the party instead of carrying water for the Obama administration. She'd take all of the blame for policy blunders, and get none of the rewards for successes.

In my eyes, this would be a step down for her, and I really hope she realizes how much she's got to lose in the party by trying to merge her wing with Obama's. The merger is good for neither of them.

BTW, this has been all over the news for two days or so. There are enough networks reporting this that we don't have to take our que from Huffington Post. Try this one or any other one for that matter. Thanks in advance.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Yes, Hillary as Liberal Lioness of the Senate--that's why I

called her office today, to ask her to stay and to remind her she said she would be there to fight for us. Reached her NYC office, but got all busiesy signals in DC.

Just Say No, Hillary! Pleeeeeeze.

And, please, anyone who can, call her offices:

List of offices and telephone numbers.

Someone fill me in with transition teams

I know it's normal to wait until much later to announce big cabinet positions, but since we're in the midst of Bushian clusterfucks isn't it odd that Obama, at least, announced his Treasury Secretary or be more forthright about other cabinet spots? What is he waiting for?

With regards to Secretary of State: for the sake of the country, I hope she takes it. Considering the scope of the problems abroad and how Obama will be preoccupied with the economy, I don't see how Kerry or Richardson would be good choices, let alone better than her.

However, I don't see this benefiting her politically. Unless she has more autonomy than previous Secretaries (A possibility, however remote, considering Obama will be knee-deep in dealing with the financial crisis). I fear Obama will use her as a scapegoat at the drop of a hat if push comes to shove.

lambert's picture

Kerry and Richardson, ick

Yeah, if those are the choices on offer, Hillary. Alas.

Forgive my grammar mistakes

Jesus (I couldn't edit it for some reason). Oh, and it seems Anglachel is onto something when talking about why Obama hasn't even named Treasury Secretary yet let alone other cabinet positions.

But yeah, it seems Richardson is the back-up and Kerry was among the names thrown around. Either of them could be fine if we weren't dealing with epic crises around the world while drowning in a financial tsunami, but we are. I wanted Clinton to win the presidency because she seemed the only one I could see shouldering the incredible responsibility ahead of the president who would have to clean up after Bush and Co. So I hope that she takes the offer (assuming Obama offered it).

Damon's picture

What's Wrong With Richardson?

At this particular post, what would be so wrong with Richardson?

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Anglachel's picture

I think it is an excellent idea

The more I think about it, the more I like it.

It requires a bit of counter-intuitive thinking, but Davidson is on to it with the observation that Obama will be preoccupied with the economy.

Thought exercise: What two people in the world can convey the seriousness of the White House's interest in a given negotiation merely by who they are? Who has the stature to sit and speak decisively with a head of state? Anglachel

Card-carrying_Buddhist's picture

Why Kerry? Why Richardson?

I see zero reasons why either one would be particularly suitable for this job.

On the other hand, I can see many reasons why Hillary Clinton would be an excellent choice for SOS.

But would she accept?

Maybe.

Way better job than VEEP.

Arguably way better than being just another Senator. More opportunities to effect um change. (Did I really say that? Yikes.)

Anyhow, in essence, it works for me.

Reporter to Mahatma Gandhi: What do you think of Western Civilization?
Gandhi to reporter: I think it would be a good idea.

Damon's picture

Huh?

I can't believe what I'm hearing. This is hardly a job tailor made for Hillary Clinton. Bill Richardson was the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, for the love of the FSM, and is probably one of the best hostage negotiators we've had in decades.

Hillary needs to stay as independent as she possibly can, IMO. She doesn't need to be inside of this administration's orbit, let alone as the SoS. Again, she'll get blamed for all of the administrations blunders, but never praised for its successes. Let someone more fitted to be a follower have administration jobs. Hillary is good right where she currently is. A cabinet job offers her little to nothing that she hasn't already experienced and had, but is rife with potential pitfalls for both her and the country. It would suck if her career ended with "Obama's Secretary of State Hillary Clinton..."

Bill Richardson has more experience as a diplomat, and works well as a background guy. Come on, we all know that cabinet positions are little more than cages for people of presidential caliber. She has no place in this administration, and certainly not as SoS.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

gqmartinez's picture

Not just "another senator"

She can be the leader of a significant branch of the Party. Taking a temporary cabint job forfeits that. Few secs of state stay the entire 8 years so Hillary gives up a seat of influence for perhaps four years of state work. The Clinton Dem wing of the Party has no more leader if Hillary gives up her power.

Richardson has the gravitas to sit with heads of state just as much as Hillary. Or even Wes Clark.

Only tyrants rig elections.

bringiton's picture

Hillary Clinton for SCOTUS

Nothing less. The good of the country we should be discussing; bugger the Party, and all of its branches.

Yeah, she says she doesn't want it, but it hasn't been offered yet. There will be at least two seats, maybe three for Obama to fill. I think Hillary Clinton as a Supreme Court Justice, in office for 20 years or more, would be an absolutely glorious and just turn of events. Think of the wonderfulness of the confirmation process; no holds, that would be dastardly, because the President and his nominee IIRC deserve an up-or-down vote.

herb the verb's picture

I agree with BIO

Hey, it happens more than you think!

If it is offered, Hillary should take a supreme court position. In the meantime she is working VERY HARD through her HillPac and campaigning for other Dems to enhance her political influence, we have not even begun to see what she will accomplish.

SOS would be a step down from that trajectory. Either SCOTUS or Senate majority leader would be the best development for her and for our country.

Valhalla's picture

SCOTUS is possibly the worst place for Clinton

Being a S.Ct. justice is a structurally reactionary position. No advocacy, no policy-setting, no fighting for what is right, and no moving around in public working up support for decent policy directions.

It would be a waste of both Clinton's better talents and of the power and credibility she built up over the past 2 years (and before, but esp. the last 2).

There are plenty of good jurists who could be chosen for the Court. Powerful Senators with the will and juice to push the president on regulation of Wall St., toward HOLC, to reform health care, to fight for reproductive rights -- not so much.

Because the problem is not that we have too little condescension from our tribe. -- okanogen

pie's picture

Yep.

I'd rather see her legislating, not adjudicating.

cg.eye's picture

Um, fuck, no.

Every evil thing said about her by Democrats and Republicans would be dredged up in any confirmation hearing. And SCOTUS candidates are stealthy by nature, just this innocent and blank of opinion of a newborn babe, to get in -- does she need that accusation of guile again, because no one will assume she doesn't know what she thinks about abortion, the death penalty, etc.?

She doesn't need scraps from Obama's table, nor one more event for his followers to trash her reputation, out of reflex. If they hold back criticism now, then they prove themselves hypocrites. Too dangerous to be president, too dangerous for a justice, right?

The only people she now needs approval from are her constituents from the great state of New York, and what powers she already has she can use for them and for us. She can do a damn sight more than Obama ever did while a Senator, and that fact helps me cope with this Administration.

teaspoon by teaspoon

I'm heartened that Obama took this out of the speculation mode, since good things are already coming of it. For example, a person who said the following in the comments here:

I'm sorry, this just makes me want to puke.

We've been living in a country defined by the Bush and Clinton clans for over twenty years. We've had their drama and moral decay spewed at us non-stop, and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of hearing about them, thinking about them, listening to them and enabling them.

Says the following downthread when it is revealed this wasn't just positioning by Clinton operatives:

My reaction is that the bubble of interest I have in Barack Obama just popped, and I suddenly feel like he's just another politician. And I'm honestly surprised by that. But also in some way relieved.

In a very weird way I feel like I can stop caring and hoping now, and that actually feels good.

These kinds of developments are 'hopeful', they show that like kryptonite kills Superman or salt kills a slug, the Clintons (among other things?) can actually drive the koolaid right out of an OFBer.

So it isn't at all like being bitten by a zombie this Obama koolaid drinking thing: there's a cure!

That first commenter is sick

in the haid. Honest to Christ, where does that idiot get off trashing the Clintons like that because of Bill's affair?! What has Hillary done to deserve the painting by his brush? Yes, the Bush family had done a neat and tidy job of screwing the country, but how you compare the Clinton years to the Bushies is beyond me. Stupid twit.

CDS. Get help.

With the threat of a Clinton in the Obama administration

It would be good to bone up on reasons to be horrified about it.

pie's picture

Ha!

Great post, VL. Some of the comments are comedy cold. I especially liked one of the last ones. Poor woman is so upset she forgot the difference between plural and possessive. Hillary made her do it, no doubt.

Good grief.

Davidson's picture

FISA didn't pierce his bubble, but Hillary Clinton did?!

Yes, folks, that is misogyny in action: irrational hate. Honestly, what else could it be? Hell, the entire rationale for voting for Obama were "change" and "judgment" and yet he picked Joe Biden for VP! And he had Kerry as a potential SoS!

The more I think about the less I feel she should do it, not out of concern she would not do a good job, but because of reactions like these which would make her the ultimate scapegoat (yet again) and the fact SoS generally is just doing what her boss tells her to, with little if any independence, and I don't trust Obama's judgment at all.

lambert's picture

Chnage ...

I really think that we need to be spelling the word that way (sort of like FCUK).

Because "chnage" isn't "change," doncha know; *Obama (the fantasy construct) is all about the latter; but Obama (in actuality) has been all about the former.

After all, "Don't judge him till he's actually done something! He's not even president yet!"

Were Hillary to be Secty of State we 1) lose strong progressive

senator with national standing and huge following. Progs/libs lose clout in the US Senate.

2) Hillary is removed from real political discourse, since Secty of State is a creature of the administration and by tradition does not get involved in domestic politics.

3) The Democratic Party loses a strong, well-known voice. Well, two of them, as Bill would need to stay more in the background and would need to be less vocal.

4) The Democratic Party loses one -- or two -- of its strongest fundraisers. I vaguely recall Condi raised hackels and concern by holding fundraisers. Were Hillary to that, the MCM would flay her.

5) Downticket Dems would lose two great campaigners and fundraisers. Perhaps this would lead to further weakening of the progressive wing in the Democratic Party. And make a takeover easier?

6) Hillary loses her senate seat, likely ending her political career. Sectys of State rarely last more than one term, if that.

7) Hillary as Secty of State becomes a lightning rod for the MCM--sparing Obama. And Sectys of State do only what the president and his team want done, unless they can work internally to get their ideas through to the prez and his team. Not impossible, but actions for Secty of St are limited.

Now, why has this leaked? Given the secrecy of the Obama camp, why is this one out there? What does it accomplish for the Obama team? What don't they want the public and more perceptive members of the press paying attention to? Was the Palin coverage losing its power to be the magician's beautiful partner? What is the magician doing he wants to keep hidden?

Cute MCM footnote: Remember when Hillary's claim to international experience was shot down by the MCM, with the MCMers saying she basically went to teas and such when overseas? Well, now, suddenly, she has the experience and connections to foreign leaders to be Secty of State. Cute, huh?

Obama's choice exposes them (including Obama) as liars

Everything they said about her, including Axelrod blaming her (but not Kerry, Biden, Edwards, etc.) for leading to the assassination of Bhutto (with Obama refusing to apologize), was just "heated" primary rhetoric. We knew that. But now the Clinton haters Obama fans know that and, hence, their collective twitching.

amberglow's picture

some more reasons why this leak --

one related to the VP thing -- "4. The Obama transition probably doesn't want to make the mistake that the Obama campaign made when Obama sung Clinton's praises, confirmed she'd be on anyone's short list, and then failed to vet her. Some in Clinton's orbit believe that Obama is going out of his way to show respect for Clinton, even to the point of floating her name for a top job and doing his due dilligence this time."

and the "to shut her up" theory: "6. The CW in Washington is that Obama wants Clinton in his cabinet more than Clinton wants to be in the cabinet, the theory being that the moment she steps into the administration, she loses her power base, she loses her Senate seat forever, and she loses her voice on domestic policy. She concedes her political identity. "

Wrong Clinton

I agree totally that we need Hillary in the Senate. But Bill! International rock star there, and the job would save him from the low company he's been keeping -- I never want to see him with George H.W. Bush again.
