I Drove My Car to Carville

MJS's picture

The ever thoughtful Digby has a post up titled "Winning into Losing." Inspired (or not) I wrote some lyrics along the lines of Digby's theme (Steve Earle is playing on the stereo so he may have influenced things a bit vis a vis these here lyrics).

I Drove My Car to Carville

I drove my car to Carville
Where all the cool cars go
If their engine runs too well
James will change it so

"Let's see here," I heard him say
"Good mileage and smooth ride?"
I nodded with satisfaction
He shook his head and cried

(chorus)
Your car needs fixin', mister
Your car has too much run
Your car may have got you to the moon
But it won't take you to the sun
What good is a car that always runs?
Anyone?

I left my car in Carville
And took a bus to Tennessee
They said there was a man there
Who would do his best for me

I got out in Nashville
Heard a fella play some chords
He looked me in the face and sang
"Why go with a winner?
You should have bought a Ford
Someone help me, dear old Lord
Someone help me to glory"

(chorus)
Your car needs fixin', mister
Your car has too much run
Your car may have got you to the moon
But it won't take you to the sun
What good is a car that always runs?
Take it...

I drove my car to Carville
Where all the cool cars go
If their engine runs too well
James will change it so

"Let's see here," I heard him say
"Good mileage and smooth ride?"
I nodded with satisfaction
He shook his head and cried

(chorus)
Your car needs fixin', mister
Your car has too much run
Your car may have got you to the moon
But it won't take you to the sun
What good is a car that always runs?
Anyone?

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.

Random term

Acronym for Known Associate. Usage example:

Bud parked three blocks over, walked up to the squadroom. No Exley, every desk occupied: men talking into phones, taking notes. A giant bulletin boar-d all Nite Owl--paper six inches thick. Two women at a table, a switchboard behind them, a sign by their feet: "R&I/DMV Requests." Bud went over, talked over phone noise. "I'm on the Cathcart check, and I want all you can get me, known associates, the works. This clown was popped twice for statch rape. I want full details on the complainants, plus current addresses. He had three pimping rousts, no convictions, and I want you to check all the local city and county vice squads to see if he's got a file. If he does, I want names on the girls he was running. If you get names, get DOBs and run them back through R&I, DMV, City/County Parole, the Woman's Jail. "Details". You got it?"
