Hello, and thank you to all the members of the members of the Mighty Corrente Building for allowing me to stop by. I crossposted this at my blog, ScaryShit. I worked for the Marijuana campaign in Nevada last year, and our opposition engaged in some mighty nasty shenanigans. Public and elected officials have every right in the world to share their views on any and all topics. That's free speech. They DO NOT have the right to campaign against an initiative while on the clock and the taxpayer's dime. Enjoy!

Bizarre.
I had these pictures at the top of this blog post, but they just disappeared. They add quite a bit of value to this post. The first pair of pictures is the first C&E (Contributions and Expenditures) form for The Committee to Keep Nevada Respectable (TCTKNR) of 2006 and a google search for the address listed on the form. Las Vegas Metro Police Department's Lieutenant Stan Olsen filed the form, and listed the offices of Las Vegas Metro for the address of The Committee to Keep Nevada Respectable. This is illegal. The judge did not address this in our lawsuit against the Clark County Commission, members of the University of Nevada Board of Regents (their vote was spearheaded by Metro Officer Stavros Anthony, Ph.D., who recently was accused of using his badge to get "freebies," another "class act" against marijuana regulation), Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gamick, and LVMPD's Lieutenant Stan Olsen.
The second pair of pictures show the fourth and final C&E report for the year for TCTKNR, and the address of Sig Rogich's Rogich Communications. By this time in the campaign, Sig Rogich, (a big time Republican consultant. He is the man in Nevada, ran Gibbons' campaign, former Gov. Guinn's, casinos, developers, etc. He was head of advertising for Reagan's 1984 "Morning in America" campaign. He came up with the idea for the Dukakis in a tank ad for GHWB. He was going to work for GWB, but scandal [Sig's titty bar zoning changes votes from City Council members whom Sig had supported], cut that short.) was heading up the opposition campaign. (Rogich also very much involved in the Nevada gubernatorial race sexual weirdness Jim Gibbons and Chrissy Mazzeo, which I covered here).
I worked for the Committee to Regulate Marijuana. We sought an emergency injunction against this group of public officials, as they were using the trappings of their office to campaign against the initiative. Republican Senator John Ensign and Republican Congressman Jon Porter were also against our initiative. The third group of pictures deal with Ensign and Porter and TCTKNR. Ensign and Porter both sent letters of support to TCTKNR, which were prominently displayed on the "Nevada Says No" Web site (and, if I recall correctly, were used in the mailers sent to voters by NCTKNR. Not sure, need to see a mailer). Any mention of Ensign or Porter has been scrubbed from the TCTKNR Web site (other than the angry letters from the "pot supporters"). I found this archive of the site with the WayBack machine.
Porter and Ensign were both "vulnerable" Republican incumbents. This is from an LV-RJ article hosted at MPP:
Rep. Henry Waxman of California is asking the Bush administration for more information about what he said appear to be politicized visits by federal officials during the 2006 election season. Included are trips made by national drug czar John Walters to Nevada to meet with now Gov. Jim Gibbons and Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., and to speak against a state marijuana legalization ballot measure.
Waxman, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, is seeking information and congressional hearings about the visits.
In a letter dated Tuesday to Walters, Waxman said he wants to know more about "efforts by White House officials to direct you or other officials in the Office of National Drug Control Policy to travel at taxpayer expense to events with Republican candidates for political office."
Digby wrote this post about Karl Rove stepping down, and speculated it may have to do with Hatch Act violations. Well, I can tell you, as someone who witnessed it first hand. The sitting regime worked in coordination to defeat a legal ballot initiative, brought forward by the people of the state of Nevada. I know a lot of you guys don't care, you might say "Oh, it's just for a bunch of dumbass potsmokers. Who cares?" Well you should care. It was a ballot measure this time. It's candidates next time.
"We obviously disagree with it," said Neal Levine, campaign manager of the marijuana committee, said of Wall's decision. "Essentially what the judge ruled was a public body could take a position on a candidate."
P.S. ChicagoDyke, at Corrente, had this to say about my earlier post:
I’m very frustrated right now, because I’m not sure how citizens can bring back the notion of “The Rule of Law” when the leadership of both parties seem so disinterested in it. The more I think on it, the more it’s a no brainer. Everyone has the right to avocate for their positions and be a part of the political process. But government officials are supposed to be working for everyone, and when they are in uniform/on the clock, they should remain politically neutral and enforce and uphold the law equally. Is that really such a crazy idea?
Clearly, it has become so. The more times I reread Matt’s post and links, the more it becomes clear to me that a criminal gang of hypocrites and thugs, with incestuous financial relationships that transcend party, are running governments high and low. This is the model of governance that Bush has made the standard over the last seven years. And the Democrats don’t seem to have any problem with that.
This stuff is very important, guys. Please help me to spread the word, please link to these posts, more people need to see what is happening.
pps-Nevada is also one of the fired US attorney states. Nevada's Bogden may have been investigating Jim Gibbons, hell-who knows, maybe he was looking into this whole mess. Do you now see why I am so pissed off at the Democrats for not pushing harder on the investigations?!?!

Law is quaint
Good post, Matt, and we really do need to pay attention. This outrage overload is dangerous. It's not time to shrug when gross crimes are being committed, and our institutions are being loaded up with the war criminals.

That said, I'm not sure you have the full picture, here.
See, if marijuana were legal, not (1) only would huge portions of the prison-industrial complex have to shut down--putting a lot of niggers back out on the street--but (2) we might be growing hemp instead of corn for ethanol, and hemp doesn't use up petroleum nearly as fast. See? There's a lot riding on this, and it's up to every citizen to do his or her part (and not do any other citizen's part, but that's a subject for another post.)

Lambert, thank you very much for your help. You are exactly right, I am a profoundly lazy man and I really need to learn html stuff, at least a little, I am pretty computer-stupid though.
I don't talk a lot about the the "Why" of the drug war very much, but that's pretty much it. I'm an activist, that's I went to work for the Committee to Regulate and Control marijuana last year. We had a lot of fantastic volunteers and employees who really laid it out on the line for our cause. However, that was a huge professional campaign. A small group of committed people can do a lot to make changes in this world. Here's a quick wrapup of a bunch of local initiatives that won in 2006. All it takes is a clipboard, and usually a few hundred signatures to get on a citywide ballot. That's a few hours of work, standing in front of a local shopping market. http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/461/...
I also want to make a plug for MPP, the Marijuana Policy Project. They were CRCM's parent organization last year. They are awesome. They get things done, and they don't mess around. They are the most professional and committed group of people I've ever had the pleasure to work with. NORML is great, if you need a lawyer or to do some research on medical marijuana. If you want to see results, it's MPP. Here's their donate page. I have a feeling we'll be seeing some really good stuff in the future from them.

We saw all of the Democratic presidential candidates sign on to stopping the raids on medical marijuana dispensaries thanks in large part to these guys, Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana, a group backed by MPP.

Ask candidates about their stance on pot, and if they do support the drug war, force them to actually articulate their views as to why. They can't answer coherently. There is no justifiable reason to support the war on marijuana users. Please, speak up, tell your friends your views, write letters to the editor, make it so that it is 'ok' to talk about marijuana reform openly. It's very important, and something that can actually be achieved with some hard work and determination.
PS
I know a lot of people don't think they can afford to donate to an organization like MPP. I can assure you, we were ecstatic every single time we opened up a letter and a five dollar bill fell out. Every bit helps guys. They work hard for the money.

plus, for an additional authoritarian fillip, pot busts are the single best instrument of social control available to the forces of lawnorder (soon imho to be augmented by 'child molestation'; i believe that's gonna be the next capital crime) in their perpetual struggle to perpetuate the status quo. Yaknow, because of that "recidivism problem."
Overt surveillance is growin' too.

It's ALWAYS about power, and degradation.
It cannot be cured, and there is NO known case of a non-recidivist provided opportunity.
