While discussing the No Child Left Behind program in New York on September 26, 2007, President Bush uttered yet another statement that defied proper grammar:
As yesterday's positive Report Card shows, childrens [sic] do learn when standards are high and results are measured.
The transcript of his remarks as of September 26 at 1 p.m. said:
As yesterday's positive Report Card shows, children do learn when standards are high and results are measured.
It has since been corrected. Why? From Hottie McHalf-truth’s press briefing on September 27:
MS. PERINO: The integrity of the transcripts are very important to me and I've made that clear.
If “integrity” is the standard, what other of the President’s mutterings should the [sic] be placed after?
Also, maybe we should add a "[sic]" after "are" in Ms. Perino's statement...
The full back and forth with Hottie:
Q …How do you all decide -- what is the mechanism for changing verbatim comments that the President makes, as was the case in his grammatical slip-up yesterday?
MS. PERINO: Yesterday? We checked into that. That was not something that anyone in the Press Office or Communication Office or anyone in the WhiStenographers Office, and we asked for it to be changed back.
Q So it's been changed back?
MS. PERINO: If it hasn't, it had -- we made the request. I haven't gone back to check, but I had made the request to make sure that it was accurate. You know, the President -- it is no secret -- sometimes makes grammatical errors. And he also is somebody, though, that gives a lot of public comments. And I think in the grand scheme of things, if any of us were -- well, maybe now I am -- monitored for such things, that we would all have slip-ups from time to time. The point is he was very proud of the record that the -- the test scores that the students achieved.
Q Well, you know, we're all monitored -- what we say in these seats and what you say from the podium. But the fact of the matter is –
MS. PERINO: The integrity of the transcripts are very important to me and I've made that clear.
More screwy Bush quotes:
"They misunderestimated [sic] me." —Bentonville, Ark., Nov. 6, 2000
"Families is [sic] where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream [sic]." —LaCrosse, Wis., Oct. 18, 2000
"I hear there's rumors on the Internets [sic] that we're going to have a draft." —second presidential debate, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2004
"Rarely is the questioned asked: Is [sic] our children learning?" —Florence, S.C., Jan. 11, 2000
The last one sounds a bit familiar, eh?
But what if [sic] applied to the entire concept of the sentence spoken, not just the grammar or pronunciation?
"The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. [sic]" – The State of the Union, 2003.
"We're going to find them. They think they can hide in a cave in the outer reaches of Afghanistan, we will go in the cave and find them. And one by one, we are dismantling this terrorist network.[sic]" - Bush discussion the War on Terror, 2003.
"Iraq possesses ballistic missiles with a likely range of hundreds of miles -- far enough to strike Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey, and other nations -- in a region where more than 135,000 American civilians and service members live and work. We've also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas. We're concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVS for missions targeting the United States. And, of course, sophisticated delivery systems aren't required for a chemical or biological attack; all that might be required are a small container and one terrorist or Iraqi intelligence operative to deliver it.[sic]
…"We know that Iraq and the al Qaeda terrorist network share a common enemy -- the United States of America. We know that Iraq and al Qaeda have had high-level contacts that go back a decade. Some al Qaeda leaders who fled Afghanistan went to Iraq. These include one very senior al Qaeda leader who received medical treatment in Baghdad this year, and who has been associated with planning for chemical and biological attacks. We've learned that Iraq has trained al Qaeda members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases. And we know that after September the 11th, Saddam Hussein's regime gleefully celebrated the terrorist attacks on America.[sic]
…"Some have argued that confronting the threat from Iraq could detract from the war against terror. To the contrary; confronting the threat posed by Iraq is crucial to winning the war on terror.[sic]” – Bush statement from October 7, 2002.
Well Ms. Perino, I’m glad to hear we now have transcripts with integrity.
Now let’s focus on the integrity of the speaker.

That may be the only non-toxic thing for which the Chimp may be remembered.
I sincerely hope so...

Seems like Ms. Perino was left behind
MS. PERINO: The integrity of the transcripts are [sic] very important to me and I’ve made that clear.
Shouldn't that be "The integrity of the transcripts is..."?
Good Catch Vastleft
I added a sentence about that when I edited my "Mew York" typo -- my edits may not have come up on the post yet.
No theft involved, only kudos to you for the catch.
Appreciated, Shane-O.
