than anywhere in the maligned South.
I came across an anti-gay demo outside a church on my way through Oly once and just mentioned in passing to a young man holding up a vicious sign that this was religion sanctioned bigotry. His response? "BITCH!".
Seems they haven't changed a whole lot since then.
I would venture to say that many are Okies and Arkies
That moved there in the Dust Bowl days. I live in Arkansas and a lot of the locals have relatives in northern California and Oregon.
They tend to have those kinds of attitudes, although I have run into some VERY enlightened locals here.
