It is precisely this kind of division that our tradition of military deference to democratically elected civilian superiors was meant to prevent. Today it suits the antiwar left to applaud the rupture of that tradition. But it is a disturbing and very dangerous precedent that even the left will one day regret.
"Even?" I'd say "especially." They've been pushing the idea that generals should run things, not their civilian superiors...
Nobody on the Left (with any shred of sanity) is calling for the 82nd Airborne to storm the Pentagon and arrest Rummy. Nobody's calling for a military dictatorship.
Only someone intent on misrepresenting the Left's position in order to prop up Rummy and the administration's disastrous policies would think so.
This is the idea the Left is pushing: when the specific Civilian (Rummy) in control of the military proves to be a complete fuck-up, and when retired Generals come out and say that the Secretary of Defense is a fuck-up, then the White House and the US Congress should listen and consider replacing him. It's pretty straightforward.
