This has been floating around for a couple of days, and is interesting to think about, as Atrios notes:
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Of course the Republicans will oppose it because they're against other people having sex. The policy is right on the merits but it'll be interesting to see how the politics and media will play out. I doubt that "Republicans opposed to contraception" will ever see the light of day.
The meat of the bill:
The bill would prohibit group health plans from excluding contraceptive drugs, devices and outpatient services if they cover the cost of other prescription drugs and outpatient services. It would also require the secretary of health and human services to disseminate information on emergency contraception to healthcare providers and require hospitals receiving federal money to provide emergency contraception to victims of sexual assault.
The bill would also mandate that federally funded programs provide information about contraceptives that is medically accurate and includes data on health benefits and failure rates.
Things we should all enjoy, no? You all know I'm pretty down on the Democratic party, and there's still a niggling sense of "horse, barn door" re Alito, but I'm going to give them credit for this. Awaking the sleeping Choice dragon is a good idea in these times. Everyone likes sex, no one likes dying of cervical cancer- let's all try to get behind that. Even you trolls. You'll get more if you do.
