If you're so rich, why aren't you smart?

Aren't the markets supposed to be rational?MR SUBLIMINAL Greed and fear? Rational? Well, if all these rich guys are so smart, then why didn't they know the Republicans would play Lucy and the football* yet again with the bailout? AP:

Oil prices fell below $105 a barrel Friday on investor concern that faltering negotiations in Washington may sabotage a bailout plan to stabilize the U.S. financial system, which could curb global growth and undermine crude demand.

Look, we're dealing with the Republicans here.

Bush doesn't know any other way to negotiate than to repeat non-negotiable demands.

And the Republicans -- and I apologize deeply for any appearance, however slight, of partisanship in our new post-partisan era -- never negotate in good faith.

So, if Lord Eschaton, based on years of experience and study, can call his shot on the bailout yesterday, then why couldn't all the rich fucks on Wall Street? Why would they have any "concerns" at all about something that was na ga happen?

And if they're that stupid, does it really make any sense to give them a trillion dollars of your money to play with?

NOTE * Kudos to Lord Eschaton for rapid fire bailout coverage! It's like... the blogosphere is back!

Well, it took long enough to bring back the blogosphere,

but Atrios has never made any pretense of being other than an economist (well, okay, there's the substitute gym-teacher thing) as a profession. The blog/media mogul stuff was a happy accident, if you read regularly over there in the beginning.

I think having something to talk about that he was interested in drew him back, and I'm glad to have him.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
