So I just found out that a lot of Senate Dems liked this language:
None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made
available by this Act may be used for any casino or other
gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swim-
ming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater,
art center, and highway beautification project.
Because, you know, "museum" is as pointless and unimportant to the health of our society as "casino." To riff off Atrios, this is clearly one of those "designed to piss off Liberals" types of legislative action. And it worked! I'm pissed! Not only is this a petty, stupid, blatantly polemical, destructive, childish piece of legislation, but wait till you see which of "our" fine Dems voted in favor of it:
Baucus (D-MT), Yea
Bayh (D-IN), Yea
Begich (D-AK), Yea
Bennet (D-CO), Yea
Bingaman (D-NM), Yea
Brown (D-OH), Yea
Byrd (D-WV), Yea
Cantwell (D-WA), Yea
Cardin (D-MD), Yea
Carper (D-DE), Yea
Casey (D-PA), Yea
Conrad (D-ND), Yea
Dorgan (D-ND), Yea
Feingold (D-WI), Yea
Feinstein (D-CA), Yea
Johnson (D-SD), Yea
Klobuchar (D-MN), Yea
Kohl (D-WI), Yea
Lincoln (D-AR), Yea
McCaskill (D-MO), Yea
Merkley (D-OR), Yea
Mikulski (D-MD), Yea
Murray (D-WA), Yea
Nelson (D-FL), Yea
Nelson (D-NE), Yea
Pryor (D-AR), Yea
Schumer (D-NY), Yea
Stabenow (D-MI), Yea
Tester (D-MT), Yea
Udall (D-CO), Yea
Udall (D-NM), Yea
Warner (D-VA), Yea
That's right kiddies, these "Democratic" heroes willingly put their names to an amendment authored by a crazy moron from a state filled with welfare-sucking fundies who like to beat down gaiis and "Injuns." Way to be bipartisan! And kick a DFH
while you're at it!
I know a lot of you didn't like the logic of BIO's most recent post, but he's not entirely wrong. Phonebooth Secret SuperLiberal or not, Obama's in a lot of fucking trouble when you realize that this is the batch of Loyal Members of the Party he's got to work with.
Any ideas about what to do about this sort of thing? At this rate, we'll never get any money for any program that actually does anything good, ever. Just hole-filling projects and MIC pork. Which means, "Depression for the rest of us."

Oh god

Reporter to Mahatma Gandhi: What do you think of Western Civilization?
Gandhi to reporter: I think it would be a good idea.
Not sure what to do
Somehow tell people in Richmond VA that Mark Warner voted against funds for the VA Museum and people in Baltimore Maryland that Cardin and Mikulski voted against the Baltimore Aquareum.
I really don't know what to do.
Vote 'em out, recall 'em or impeach 'em
and if that doesn't work, picket, call, fax, write and generally raise hell with them.
They're DEMOCRATS. They should ACT LIKE Democrats. That fails, raise hell with the voters who sent 'em to do this stupid stuff instead of representing their constituents.
Where's that translation I saw of this language ...
None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made
available by this Act may be used for any casino
Casino = Indian gambling = not keeping the Indians in their place = bad
or other gambling establishment,
gambling = letting some schmuck outside Our Kind win = bad
aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium,
got all those in place, just raise the entry fees to keep the riffraff out
community park,
community = brown people working together for their rights = bad
museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.
arts = gays = bad
Really, it's not that hard to see the rest of the named Dems buying into that line of thought, although Stabenow's a disappointment in the list. I guess I ought to be mad at Bingaman, but he's a whole state line away from me. The rest of 'em have no excuse, though, especially the Udall boys. WTF
did they get offered, to vote for this piece of crap?
Oh, right. Money to run again. How could I have forgotten that?

debbie stab u in the back has been a failure
since day one, one of the original "bipartisan" types and anyone who lives here could've told people this is what she could be "counted on for." i really don't like her, you can probably tell.
nice analysis Sarah. that's more or less how i see it. or as a friend of mine puts it (and you can substitute "black" for a lot of IDs) the republican party platform: no money for black people, ever and at any political cost.
CD, let's amend that:
no money for anybody else, ever, at any political cost.
'Cause, you know, epidermal pigmentation aside, I ain't that different from you.
Neither one of us is or ever will be a reliable GOP voter, no?

Debbie Stabenow has been such a disappointment, but just as much, a riddle. She was a social worker, and while in the Michigan legislator authored a bill to increase penalties for domestic violence, but she can be rather "bipartisan" on the things she shouldn't be bipartisan on. She's highly acomplished (minority house leader in the Michigan legislature, I believe, chosen to be on a gubernatorial ticket, first woman to be an incumbent elected Senator, etc...) But, she's never a reliable vote. She replaced Michigan's moderate Republican senator, but she's never been the senator to count on in this state.
Levin, on the other hand, has been a solid and unabashed liberal on most things. But, then, it's understandable that Michigan has a good cop/bad cop thing going on. Levin is effectively Detroit's senator, and Debbie is the senator for the rest of the entire state, in practice.
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
Any news on what Lieberman and the Group of Who Knows How Many
have come up with?
Just saw on C-Span tail end of live presser with Lieberman and some others* talking about their great bipartisan breaththrough.
Which, per Holy Joe, Rahmbo said was just wonderful.
OMG, what is up with those idiots?
Anyone think experience might be a good thing in a president of the US? We're now on our second one with little actual experience, this one even less....
Help!
*Saw Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Collins (I think). How many in this new Screw the People group--14? 16? 20? More?
Politico has list of cuts to Obama Stimulus Bill --
From Thrush, posted at 10:15PM:
Fewer tax cuts? Not listed. State assistance, health and education seem to be taking big hits.
What mess this stimulus bill has turned into. Where was Obama's leadership? Where was the vaunted Rahmbo's steering of the legislation? I'm feeling nauseous.
I can't believe Merkley voted for this.
I just called his office today. Now I'm going to have to call again on Monday. Jeff is a liberal. I don't understand why he voted for Coburn's little snitty amendment. Maybe it's because Jeff is new and is just finding his way around. I hope.
Schumer voted FOR it, but Hillary's replacement did not--and NJ
senators stood strong against this crap. That Kirsten Gillibrand voted no is quite interesting, but then she's the one who has to build up her cred with NY voters. Schumer? WTF
?
Some of the most lasting and cherished accomplishments of FDR's New Deal programs are the parks and improvements to parks. My childhood is filled with memories of wonderful hours spent in Milwaukee County parks developed mostly during the Great Depression with WPA labor and Federal funds. Milwaukee had a great history of beautiful parks (Frederick Law Olmstead designed several), but much was added during FDR's time.
What is wrong with our current Dems? Well, I predicted Dems would not be able to stand up to Obama and right now Obama wants to be the bipartisan savior, so I'm betting some pressure was brought to "support the party's standard bearer" -- who doesn't support many Democratic standards!
Yes, we will get tasty morsels, some tidbits, some crumbs, on some things. SCHIP was not something Obama would not have signed. I'm still waiting to learn what Obama really wants to accomplish as prez. If it's bipartisanship, we are all SOL.
The hell? they're cutting ALL the spending?
Some damn stimulus.
'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

Well, it's nice to know that our new CO Senators will keep to
the long tradition of suckage maintained by Allard and Salazar.
The problem is that since they had things the Right uses (golf courses? WTF
?) and everyone else uses (parks? c'mon!), they thought they were being pleasingly bipartisan.
"not entirely wrong"
Thanks for the praise, CD. I do try.
