Glenn Greenwald has the story, and Glenn Greenwald has McCaffrey's PowerPoint presentation to NBC executives [PDF].* (You can click the slides to expand them.)
Slide 1:
Slide 2:
Note that McCaffrey's preferred approach is diplomatic, and he blames Congress for forcing a "muscular approach." His view is that Obama felt "politically" he had to go along, and that Secretary Clinton's "hands are tied." (Note that there's no mention in the slides of a set of tactics Iran could obviously use; "Millenium Challenge" is still a taboo subject in the circles within which McCaffrey lives and moves and has his being.)
OK, so much for slide toward war. Towards the end, McCaffrey goes on to present a number of high level slides on other "national security challenges", including "putting a value on" of America -- Surprise! It's in dollars! -- and then presents the final slide which is, so far as I can tell, out-of-band, and certainly unmotivated by the ostensible purpose of the presentation:
Slide 3:
Of course, I can't know the patter McCaffrey used between slides, or during them. However, I can think of many reasons for McCaffrey to point out that the American public has great confidence in the military as an institution, and many of them are not good. I mean, McCaffrey does point out that 78% of the American people have confidence in the Army, 35% in the President, 27% in his own audience, teebee execs, and 12% in Congress, but that has no domestic political implications and is, like, totally not a threat.
Combine those polling figures** with the strong support in the military for Ron Paul, who is seen as a revolutionary figure*** who wants to end the wars, and the correct perception many in the military have that they have been ill-used by ill-conceived missions imposed by "the politicians," and abused and the banks (23%), and you have the ingredients for a volatile mix that could potentiate at any one of a number of outside shocks (listed as "national security challenges" in the previous slide).****
Eh?
NOTE * Power corrupts, and PowerPoint corrupts absolutely. Along with Edward Tufte, serving Generals and many others deprecate the effect of PowerPoint on the country's ability to make war. "PowerPoint makes us stupid."
NOTE ** OK, Gallup. For all we know, this is a 1% push poll.
NOTE *** Since Paul and Romney are BFFs, it's likely they will be deceived in their hopes.
