It's called gambling because players wager varying amounts of money that a certain company's stock will rise or fall, and depending upon their bet and the outcome the player will see a profit or a loss.
On a personal note, I was never a very good gambler. I could not get the final score until after the game I wanted to wager on was played. Bummer, that. Made the deal a tad risky.
