Krugman wins Nobel!

Nice guys do finish first sometimes.

"Paul Krugman, a professor at Princeton University and an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science on Monday.

Mr. Krugman received the award for his work on international trade and economic geography. ..."

On his blog, The Conscience of a Liberal , he says:

"A funny thing happened to me this morning …"

Comments

That is absolutely fabulous news!

Congratulations!!!!

I used to like Paul Krugman when he stuck to writing ....

... about economics, but now he’s just so partisan [irony!] Haw. One in the eye for the wingers!

UPDATE The Bloomberg coverage. And as of 9:15AM EST, his post on the announcement has 535 comments. Atrios territory!

[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Yes, Virginia, there IS justice in the world

Well, occasionally, anyway.

It feels almost as exciting as if a close friend has won.

This surely will increase his influence... a wonderful thing.

"One in the eye for the wingers"

Yes, the Kossacks are freaking out.

"But ... but... but ... he was a Hillary supporter!!"

Actually, they aren't

The idea is the pragmatic Obama isn't petty, and doesn't hold grudges, so Krugman might even become an Obama advisor or perhaps be in the cabinet. Which is why, of course, Hillary underwent a thorough vetting process and became the VP. Oh, wait...

UPDATE "Aren't," that is, "freaking out."

[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Krugman should stay out of the Obama administration

The calls for Obama to "discover" Krugman, who has not been one of his economic advisors, and put him in the administration are coming fast and furious.

I think Krugman's far more valuable remaining objective and keepin' it real.

I'll bet Luskin

is crying in his cornflakes this morning.

Hahaha!

Krugman kept me sane during the 2000 campaign, and he gave

me the words to explain to others why Bush was so economically dangerous. And completely mathematically in LaLa Land.

I am Snoopy Happy Dancing happy that he won the Nobel Prize in Economics!

Maybe his getting the Nobel Prize will cause his NYTimes co-columnists, such as Rich and MoDo, who are, amazingly viewed as liberals, to pay more attention to what he says.

And, we might all get ponies....

Pigs might fly....

Nah, MoDo will just keep doing her awful thing. Maybe there's hope for Rich, but I doubt it.

What if they had listened to Krugman back in 2000? And written the truth about Gore and Bush, instead of their nasty snark and lies? Can't go there--that way lies thoughts of all the troubles we could have avoided if Gore had been prez.... Yes, we would still have troubles, but they wouldn't be all the death and loss in Iraq. Would the Big Banker Boiz have gotten all the dereg they wanted? Who knows. Would Gore have appointed people who would actually regulate? Most likely.

Looking back at this What-If indeed can lead to madness. Or, getting really, really, really mad.

I encountered the blogosphere

because of a Krugman column on Atrios and Trent Lott.

[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Krugman column on Atrios and Trent Lott

Linky?

Best I can do is this...

... in late 2002. It's a personal memory.

I should clarify that Atrios (or Eschaton) was mentioned only is passing and was not the subject of the column. So, I googled, and there was the blogosphere.

[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Evidently, there are some sour grapers out there

who feel that Krugman was rewarded for his political beliefs.

I guess it's human nature to shoot messengers but praise bulldozer incompetence displayed by the elite.

Now we are so happy

We do the dance of joy!

My economist friend called me up this morning before I'd had my coffee and left a message: "You might want to find out who just won the Nobel Prize in Economics... I think you'll be delighted..."

So I thought, hmmm. What economist would delight me. Roubini? Nah, can't be. I can't think of one. Let me check Krugman's blog...

[Like I said, I hadn't had my coffee yet.]

So, will MoDo win the Nobel Prize for Fiction?

I can't believe I'm the first person to ask this....

Paul Krugman's Blog

has been the first thing I read every morning since the day he started it. When I clicked on him this am there were 914 comments. Now I wish I had saved the email he sent in reply to one I sent him several years ago (before he started his blog).

Maybe it is something about truly talented folk being unpretentious, but Dana Priest of WaPO who won a Pulitzer for the Walter Reed reporting also sent an email after I thanked her for her coverage of that issue.

It's an article of faith with me: I write to raise hell and I write to praise. Keeps the Karma balanced (I hope).

cassius chaerea, you just told a lie about Daily Kos

Here is the actual way the news of Krugman's Nobel was received at Daily Kos:

Paul Krugman Wins Nobel Prize In Economics
by DemFromCT
Mon Oct 13, 2008 at 04:44:03 AM PDT

And the NY Times must be kvelling. The just-announced story:

The American economist Paul Krugman won the 2008 Nobel prize for economics for bringing together analysis of trade patterns and where economic activity takes place, the prize committee said on Monday.

You can read more Krugman here.

Al Gore? Paul Krugman? Perhaps our long national nightmare really is coming to an end.

Update [2008-10-13 7:53:11 by DemFromCT]:

Daily Kos book review of The Conscience of a Liberal.

Krugman's political realization in recent years that liberal policies need a progressive movement, and his embrace of organized labor and the netroots as pillars of a progressive movement are a good part of his politicla phlosophy.

What makes progressive institutions in to a movement isn't money; It's self-perception. Many Americans with more or less liberal beliefs now consider themselves members of a common movement, with the shared goals of limiting inequality and defending democratic principles. The movement reserves it's greatest scorn for Democrats who won't make a stand against the right, who give in on Social Security privatization or escalation in Iraq.

I can't tell whether Lambert's comment was meant to correct your lie; if it was, he buried the lede.

Could I make a request of my fellow Correntians. And yes, I know most of you don't think of me as such, but I am still one of the founding members of this blog. Could you please try and deal with your obsession with the evil that is Kos and his blog with a therapist, instead of using this blog to do so. Your obsessions have led to some notable examples of lies and distortions which do dishonor to all of us. I'll have more to say about this in a post, but to come upon it in such a flagrant manner, with a commentator making a claim that a quick trip to Daily Kos would have told said commentator simply wasn't true, is depressing. Especially in the context of honoring Krugman.

The facts are these; Daily Kos as a blog has shown itself much more ready to criticize Obama than Corrente as a blog has shown itself able to acknowledge that Barak Obama has ever accomplished ANYTHING of note in the world, or to discuss him, his policies, his campaign, and those who have a different view from the main one here at Corrente in any other context but a negative one....

I've read the charge here often that Daily Kos is nothing more nor less than a 527 for Obama. I think a fair reading of Daily Kos since the end of the primary season makes that claim ridiculous. However, I feel fairly comfortable in making the claim that Corrente has turned itself into a 527 devoted to denigrating Obama, his campaign, all Democrats everywhere, and pretty much the entire liberal progressive blogisphere and all aspects of the liberal progressive movement. And if right=wing memes and sources are required to do that, so be it. Again, I'll have more to say about this today, in a post that responds to Elixir's post about ACORN and it's so-called voter/voter registration fraud.

Hooray!

As someone who has actually had to study Krugman's work in international trade, and his work in regional economics, he was due to earn this prize sooner or later. His work is genuinely ground breaking. He is well regarded in his profession.

To discover him writing columns in 2000 was sanity saving for me. To find him blogging was simply cool, and turned out to be very useful for getting a quick grip on the intersection of politics and the economy. His blog became more important to me than his columns.

However, I wouldn't go so far as to say there was no "editorial comment" made by the committee with this award. The fascinating thing to me - as someone who has followed the Nobel awards in econ for the past 20 years - is Krugman is not sharing that award, is not sharing this spotlight, with any other economist. That's what's unusual. The Nobel committee awarded the prize to Krugman alone.

Sweet!

And, fwiw, I'm hoping Krugamn's early acknowledgment of Hillary's progressive stance manages to reflect back on her if/when the Obama presidency goes forward. Krugman was correct about Hillary in the very same way Krugman has been correct about a whole array of other things. One can but (dare I say it here?), hope?

Great joy in mudville today

for the Mighty Krugster has not struck out. Who was it who called him a liar and a loser back in February? And let me count the blogs...

I haven't read everything he's ever written, but I too, have his blog and columns on my RSS reader. Only once have I ever felt a false note from him (weirdly - when he took an obviously gratuitous slap at McCain in a column in which he apparently felt the need to shore up his liberal cred [why, pray tell?]). Other than that, he is the straightest shooter there is. We love him. Paul Krugman is a true American hero.

Krugman

I am glad Krugman was recognized, and in a small way makes up for the way the committee did so much to advance the Chicago boys and disaster capitalism. I can't wait to find out who got the peace prize.

Leah, I for one am delighted to see you post and look forward to your post. Here is a cute puppy in anticipation.

Martti Ahtisaari

the former Finnish Prime Minister won the Nobel Peace Prize.
http://nobel-peace-prize-news.newslib.co...

before the NYT column,

he was writing at Slate-- from 96-99 -- http://www.slate.com/id/3944/qp/33899/

a Univ of Chicago guy was the favorite to win--

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/blog/...

"... The winner of the Nobel economics prize has just been announced, and it's something of a surprise.

... The favourite in the pre-awards betting was Eugene Fama, an economist at the University of Chicago. Fama developed the efficient market hypothesis, which argued that all traded assets – from bonds to mortgage-backed securities – are already accurately valued based on the information available to investors.

Perhaps the Nobel committee felt that this wasn't really Fama's year, as the fear and panic following the credit crunch threatens the collapse of the entire financial system. ..."

-- that guy will probably work for Obama.

Congrats to Krugman

Apparently the Chicago Way economic model is being thoroughly discredited within economic circles.

Obama golf prophylactic: just because I mention "Chicago" and "discredited" in the same sentence has NOTHING TO DO WITH BARACK OBAMA.

Waiting to read

Leah,

I am very anxious to read your argument proving the following:

The facts are these; Daily Kos as a blog has shown itself much more ready to criticize Obama than Corrente as a blog has shown itself able to acknowledge that Barak Obama has ever accomplished ANYTHING of note in the world, or to discuss him, his policies, his campaign, and those who have a different view from the main one here at Corrente in any other context but a negative one….

I’ve read the charge here often that Daily Kos is nothing more nor less than a 527 for Obama.

That is a very bold pronouncement, very far-reaching, very definitive. I would very much like to read your evidence.

Priorities...

... those who invest their time in posting drive the discussion.

Those who don't, don't.

Simple as that.

Glad that comment was chery-picked and cleaned up more forcefully than I did, though. Every little bit helps!

UPDATE I also have a difficult time seeing how forcefully advocating HOLC, for example, let alone giving blanket coverage of the crisis could possibly be construed as "denigrating" "all aspects of the liberal progressive movement." But I'm always willing to be enlightened!

More on Krugman

Here's Krugman on the dias at Eschacon -- at some point before we had dinner with him (hat tip, the excellent and happy dancing Susie, who organized it).

And a blast from the past from the King of Snark...

And more on Krugman

BTD points out that early Obama supporter Bareback Andy still hasn't mentioned Krugman's Nobel.

And how come nobody's interviewed Krugman's sons?

Positively Acknowledging An Economist For

being right and speaking truth to power. What a concept. Something this country needs to see much, much more of if we are ever to get it back on a positive track. Liberal doses of comparing the reality of actions with speeches vs personality politics might actually one day give this country a president who is actually concerned about real people and has the expertise to bring about changes that will be for the common (vs corporate and fat cat) good.

Kudos to Krugman.

Did Anyone notices AP's take on this?

Courtesy the AP

The very first sentences includes:

"aul Krugman, the Princeton University scholar, New York Times columnist and unabashed liberal"

It then goes on to include:

"Krugman has been a harsh critic of the Bush administration and the Republican Party in The New York Times, where he writes a regular column and has a blog called "Conscience of a Liberal."

He has also taken the Bush administration to task over the current financial meltdown, blaming its pursuit of deregulation and unencumbered fiscal policies for the financial crisis that has threatened the global economy with recession.

Perhaps better known as a columnist than an economist to the public, Krugman has also come out forcefully against John McCain during the economic meltdown, saying the Republican presidential candidate is "more frightening now than he was a few weeks ago." Krugman (pronounced KROOG-man) also has derided the Republicans as becoming "the party of stupid."

Tore Ellingsen, a member of the prize committee, acknowledged that Krugman was an "opinion maker" but added that he was honored on the merits of his economic research, not his political commentary.

Maybe, I'm just being paranoid, but why is it the author felt to take this angle? How many times was he called a liberal in just the first few paragraphs? The authors are Karl Ritter and Matt Moore, BTW, and I know nothing about them. I just thought the piece was kind of slanted to make Krugman look like an undeserving radical. lol
