The man shows how it's done. Surprise, the Kantor film clip video smearing the Hillary campaign was doctored. Nevertheless...

Lie down with dogs...

NOTE So, how do you get a viral video back in the tube? And say... Who was pushing a doctored anti-Hillary video? The same crowd that was pushing the fake WVWV anti-Hillary smear? The same crowd that pushed the Muslim garb anti-Hillary smear, that Kevin Drum retracted, but Obama repeated?

Honestly, what's next from these guys? Serifs?

UPDATE Splendid example of parsing from the unnamed [why?] smear artist. D.A. Pennebaker is the director of the "The War Room," from which the Kantor video was lifted; Ben Smith quotes him:

The second expletive, he said, appeared to have been entirely fabricated, with new audio dubbed onto the original movie.

In an earlier version posted yesterday, the clip was circulating with a subtitle indicating -- Pennebaker says inaccurately -- that Kantor had insulted Indianans; the racial slur appears to have been added to the second version.

Smith then adds an update:

UPDATE: I spoke to the editor of the video who said that he enhanced, but didn't alter, the audio in the second portion of the video.

Well.

1. We're really posing the old philosophical question of the identity of indiscernibles. Can the viewer tell the difference between "new audio dubbed" and "enhanced, but didn't alter"? I'm guessing No. Perhaps we could settle on "digitally manipulated"?

2. Obviously, the video was meant to hurt Clinton in IN; that's why the subtitle slurring IN was added. Oddly, or not, Smith doesn't cover who added the subtitle and why in his UPDATE.

3. Why are there two versions of the video? Did the client request changes from "the editor of the video"?

4. Why won't Smith name the editor? Is the editor from the Obama campaign? Affiliated with the Obama campaign? A member of the OFB? What other material has this editor dubbed enhanced?

5. Who posted the video?

6. Who blog-whored the video?

And so on. If we had a functioning media critique, which we don't, those are exactly the kinds of questions I would expect our A listers to be taking up and resolving. Of course, holding my breath on this one would be life-threatening.

UPDATE Wait! I've got the answer! Clintonian Mind Control Waves™ beamed from Mount Evil caused an Obama operative to do something completely out of character and discredit the Obama campaign! Cue another round of W.O.R.M., 10, 9, 8, counting 7, 6 ...

UPDATE There's a word for this kind of disinformation campaign, and I'm surprised I didn't remember it. But Susie did: Ratfucking. Ah yes, takes me back. A new kind of politics my sweet old Aunt Fanny. Looks like I'll have to update the Lexicon....

UPDATE How very, very odd. WKJM isn't covering this at all. I mean, you'd think that when a video that has Clinton operatives supposedly insulting IN says before the crucial IN primary goes viral, and all over the A list, and then the video turns out to be doctored, there'd be some coverage, any coverage. Say, can't WKJM just call up his good friends at the Politico and ask them who the unnamed "editor" was? Just to put those nasty rumors that the Obama campaign was behind all this to rest? Nah. Move along people, move along. There's no story here.

UPDATE Speaking of going viral, there's now a link to what I believe is the doctored video on Kantor's Wikipedia entry. Thorough!

Kudos to Atrios

for correcting the record.

Although I do wonder how much longer it will take him to realize that it's not like the old days, you can't just click on blogs and presume they are telling you the truth.

Bloggy Truthiness

you can’t just click on blogs and presume they are telling you the truth.

I'm thinking of this as the Aravosis Effect; it's kind of the blogospheric equivalent of the Doppler Effect. It describes the ever-increasing velocity at which wishful innuendo spreads from blog to blog until it drowns out skepticism and crowds out empirical reality.

Aravosis... Isn't the one who had a hard time making it on 75K?

Those "creative class" types sure have it hard!

This blog was linked to at TL by a commenter -- guy claimed

credit for doing the Kantor YouTube video.

Now, the post is "updated," but without the content that I recall reading earlier. Interesting.

Appears to definitely be an Obamabot spot.

Anyone know anything about this site? http://www.jedreport.com/2008/05/hillary-clinton.html

Does anyone here have the tick-tock for how this video

was investigated and the details determined?

Thanx to whoever knocked it down. However, at the link above they still believe it.

Watch...

...the Obama people will quickly pivot to saying that the hackishness of the Kantor clip proves that it was a _Clinton_ ratfuck designed to make Obama look bad, along the lines of Karl Rove bugging his own candidate's office. Nope.

But from my own digging.

Guy on jedreport dot com

"Jed" himself:

i can 100% vouch for the fact that nothing was dubbed in from the dvd. it is exactly what was on the dvd. there was a little bit of audio quality filtering, but that doesn't change what was said, just narrows the dynamic range and gets rid of background noise.

The various videos on youtube, are from very very recent accounts. Created basically to post this video.(created less that 12 hours from the current time)

"Jed's" own youtube channel is chock full of CDS. Created in March 2007. 187 videos!

Willy, this is great stuff, but I'm not sure it makes Jed the editor, only an early propagator. Nevertheless... It's interesting. You saw the non-denial denial over at Politico? They're saying nothing to do with the Obama campaign, but there aren't many degrees of separation from being a Hill staffer to being a campaign operative.

first paragraph, not that that there was a quite likely doctored video making the internet rounds which shows a Clinton adviser in a bad light. No, much better to put the slanderous "quote" in the part most likely to be read. Sheesh.

By Alex Koppelman

What did Mickey Kantor really say?
A former aide to Bill Clinton is the center of controversy today after a video emerged on YouTube in which he allegedly says, "Look at Indiana -- 42-40. It doesn't matter if we win; those people are shit. How would you like to be a worthless white ni***r?"

The former aide in question is Mickey Kantor, who was the chairman of Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign; he's now an informal advisor to Hillary Clinton. The clip is taken from legendary director D.A. Pennebaker's documentary about the 1992 Clinton campaign, "The War Room."

But as quickly as the video surfaced and the controversy began, it seems now to have abated, as those who jumped on the story early are now largely walking it back and both Kantor and Pennebaker have contended that the clip in which Kantor's shown saying that is doctored. The video that kick-started all this has been pulled from YouTube; a longer clip from the movie that includes the disputed moment is below. (The section in question begins at about 4:38 in.)

"The War Room" was nominated for an Oscar in docs, and

fairly widely distributed in theaters. Here's Janet Maslin's brief review from the NYTimes: http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/122628/The-War-Room/overview

Editing...

here is what the audio is being quoted as saying...

"Look at Indiana -- 42-40. It doesn't matter if we win; those people are shit. How would you like to be a worthless white ni***r?"

HOLY CELESTE FREMON!

Here we have another case of creative editing...except in this case, we have the actual context...her is what is actually said...

Look at Indiana -- 42-40. It doesn't matter if we win; those people are shitting...oh excuse me..[garbled] in the White House. How would you like to be [inaudible]"

By leaving out the "in the White House" whoever came up with this scam deliberatly and knowingly misrepresented what was on the tape.

The words

jeqal's picture

They are talking about Indiana

They are talking about the polls, Cantor points to the paper, he could have said "those people are shitty" referring to just about anything, I doubt seriously it is about Indiana esp as they are ahead in Indiana and would be looked at favorably, the other thing is that they are on camera, and they are aware of it. My interpretation from being in business where you are talking about something and point to a paper with someone's name on it who you don't rely on for info and say, oh yeah well these people are totally shitty.
There is not enough info to make an interpretation of this. But my experience with educated whites is that the n word is not in our vocabulary period.

I think it is as likely to be an anti-semantic themos that we can look forward to unfolding with the Obama camp.

Indiana

Quote two reviews from the early 90’s where reviewers say something about Kantor saying, they think, something about Indiana.

If Mickey Kantor had said the people of Indiana were sh!t, right in the middle of a famous documentary, shouldn't there have been a hue and cry from Hoosiers right about the time the movie came out in the first place? Tapper has those quotes (thx jawbone), but they don't seem to point to any actually offended Indiana denizens. You'd think an Indiana newspaper would have said something in real time.

FlipYrWhig's picture

Paul...

Look at Indiana — 42-40. It doesn’t matter if we win; those people are shitting…oh excuse me..[garbled] in the White House. How would you like to be [inaudible]”

I'm surprised it doesn't say "How would you like to be a noble, selfless candidate of hope and change, like that fine community organizer Barack Obama, about whose good works I've heard so much and whose reputation we'll have to be sure to destroy with plausibly deniable racist tactics. All things in time. Mwahahahahah!"

willyjsimmons's picture

Jake Tapper

feigning ignorance and stirring the pot at the same time.

It's now a multifaceted scandal now.

1.) Did Kantor use the slur?

2.) Did Kantor call Hoosiers shitty.

3.) Did Kantor insult Hoosiers by calling them Indianians?

Tapper is skillfully playing the 'even other people way back then questioned what he said...so I GUESS there is SOME chance it MIGHT be what Kantor was implying'

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. (typical of his work as well)

Then top it off with

Were I not currently eating a chicken sandwich at Liberty East Restaurant in Charlotte, NC, while working on a World News piece about the economy and the candidates

The mind boggles.

I'm currently too busy to actually verify my theories, but I have time to write this post filled with just enough caveats to cover my ass just in case this blows up in my face

not after apologizing

There is not enough info to make an interpretation of this. But my experience with educated whites is that the n word is not in our vocabulary period.

I wouldn't go that far. But I seriously doubt that after apologizing to the cameraman for using the word "shitting", that Kantor would have used the word "n****r" immediately afterwards.

BDBlue's picture
