Leader Nance: Social Security benefit cuts are on the table
Primary tabs
Pelosi and Obama appear to be on the same page when it comes to entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare. Obama announced last week that he would convene a "fiscal responsibility summit" in February to focus on long-term problems with the economy and the skyrocketing costs of benefit programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
"I support what he wants to do, to have a summit of that kind," Pelosi said Sunday. "We will have our own initiatives in the Congress to work with him on that."
Pelosi said everything should be on the table, including benefit cuts.
"The only thing we didn't want to put on the table is eliminating Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid," she said.
Well, that's certainly a relief. You Villagers really had me going, there!
Of course, we remember very well what Leader Nance immediately took off the table in 2006:
Impeaching Bush for his many crimes.
And she was true to her word then: No impeachment.
So, it seems clear that Leader Nance will be true to her word, now, about what she puts on the table:
Benefit cuts for useless eaters like the old. And that, after working so hard to pass the Bush + Reid + Pelosi + Obama + Paulson bailout bill to give Big Money $700 billion dollars of our money with no transparency and no accountability.
Really makes you wonder who's entitled to what, doesn't it?
NOTE Like I say, I'm all for shared sacrifice. Just as long as it's clear that I've done my sacrificing over the last thirty years.

Social security is not an entitlement
Workers have payroll taxes cut for this.
Remember when Rostenkowski wanted to cut *something* with Social Security or Medicare and the old folks attacked his limo!!

I wish I could see some numbers where, if the cap on S.S. earnings was removed or increased, how much of a difference it would make in the solvency of the program.
All of them
They've all lost their collective minds. I think just as Bush found, the executive office and Congressional leadership will find that they neither want nor need this fight against their own people. It's bad enough the GOP uses this as a cudgel against us; the Dems need to recognize that the fix they are searching for is right in front of their faces, and it doesn't involve a divestment in the system, and stop adding insult to injury so they can appear 'sensible', which is something so far to the right these days it's laughable.
Responsibility
Rahm, it was not the "people" who screwed everything up dude! It was our "leaders" in government, banking, finance, real estate and the rest that fucked up our system; not the old people on Social Security. Average Americans had no idea what a structured investment vehicle was, nor how to invest in one, or have the money to invest in one. Nor was the "average American" able to obtain multi-million dollar bonuses while a company's stock goes in the toilet. The average American had their 401ks in that stock which tanked and have diddly-squat now.
Lost their collective minds--or lost their bearings as Dems
Or maybe this is simply the result of the hostile takeover of the Democratic Party by the Obama Party.
BIO wrote this weekend that he told us early on that Obama is a Conservative Centrist, aka center right. I hadn't noticed use of that label during the primary or the campaign--I just noticed all his little, and little emphasized, paens to Reagan and to ideas of the Right.
Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh!!
I truly did have hope he was playing an election game, not showing his true colors. That all those calling him liberal were actually correct. Oh, cripes.
If BIO is accurate, that's he's a Conservative Centrist, we are well and truly fucked. And have lost a truly golden opportunity to make this a better society. What an awful possibility. Times ripe for actual change are few and far between, alas.
Thinking about that Newsweek cover which portrayed Obama as FDR--should it have been as St. Ronnie? Meet the new boss, same as the old boss?
take social security off the table
anyone who want to courteously tell the Democrats to take social security off the table can do so at info@dccc.org
This used to be WKJM's turf
Example,
example,
example (actually an early Obama apology)
example (also Medicare)
example,
Way back machine example (pre-kidnapping)
But now? Crickets. Although we are given a "deep thought" and (upon thinking that thought) are urged to "Soak it Up and Be Happy". So at least we got that going for us....
I know, I know Josh "Eye Roll" Marshall. Just checking though, on one of the former self-appointed hard-fightin' Social Security defenders from back before the 2008 campaign coopted so them with ponies.
Wow!
Pelosi:
Is she Speaker of the House or the lord of Skullcrusher Mountain?
She's not going to totally kill us yet! Hooray!
You need the Obama-Biden police to set you straight
Because you all need some serious convincing.
For the record, I didn't vote for Obama because this is the sort of thing that seemed you *should* expect from Obama.
Mrs. Greenburg joins chorus demanding "sacrifice" from "all"!
Eli at Left Eye on the News caught this lump of coal (I'd almost typed "gem"):
Lordy, lordy, Obama! You've opened Pandora's Box--well, the conservatives' wish chest--and look what has flown out. Wanna try and put the lid on this crap, Pres. Obama? Please let Pelosi know the Brits instituted national healthcare
after suffering years of real war, with real dying and real sacrifice, then suffering through terrible economic times after the war. There was still rationing into the 1950's, for FSM's sake!
Jeez. what wimps these Dem leaders be!
Seems Obama is a Dem wimpiness enabler.... Just what we don't need.
Spines! Balls! FDR's Four Freedoms! Real Democratic principles!
And, Hillary, we needed you in the damn Senate.
excellent, excellent point
that national healthcare [and very good car it has turned out to be too] was established right when it was most 'unaffordable'.
