Last Tuesday night I emailed Barney Frank(my rep.) after becoming incensed with his recent comments claiming advocating for Medicare for All, which he’s “always supported” was “suicide”. I told Mr. Frank that if he supports Medicare for All it is not enough to sit on the sidelines, you have to advocate for it. I told him the health finance reform proposal being crafted in Congress is very similar to the failing Massachusetts reforms. I insisted he do his job and be my voice in Congress by at least pushing for the CBO to analyze Medicare for All. Pointing out a policy that will cover everyone for less money with better health care is not suicidal, it's sensible. And, further, the American people are entitled to all the information available about the spectrum of solutions to our health care and health care finance issues.
Two days later...
I received an unexpected call from the US Capital. Barney Frank's legislative assistant, Diego Sanchez, was on the line. The first thing he said to me was, "I just want to hear what you have to say." I can not explain what a relief it was to finally just having someone on the Hill listening to me. He did not try to sell me Obama-Care. I told him when you outright say something isn’t “politically possible” you make it so(FDL's letsgetitdone calls this, "reflexivity"). I told him more than that. I was loaded with facts and figures as to why Obama-Care wouldn’t work but Medicare for All would work. He agreed with many of my points, and I asked him to ask Barney to direct the CBO to analyze Medicare for All, and we’ll see what Americans think about better health coverage for less. I encourage everyone to write their congresspersons and request the same before the fall vote. Make yourself heard lest you have any regrets about what could have been. Sanchez was a delight to talk to. We had quite a long discussion. He said he would pass on my request to Barney.

Congratulations! Have a bottle of Moxie, on me!
(not that you need it!) Cheers!
This gives me hope for my letters and emails.... better keep my notes at hand when I answer the phone.

We can't afford not to have single-payer!
Yeah, you inspired me to finally write this.
We got the moxie!!!
Medicare for All is Civil Rights
CBO is performing a cost analysis of Single Payer in August?
According to this post, Rep. Anthony Weiner said on Ed Schultz's show earlier today 'The CBO is performing a cost analysis of Single Payer over the August recess.' (Sorry, I haven't had a chance to verify that yet but it seemed reasonably plausible to pass on.)
Every apathetic citizen is a silent enlistee in the cause of inverted totalitarianism.—Sidney Wolin
Really???
Are you sure?
That would be FANTASTIC!
Medicare for All is Civil Rights
Weiner's office said his bill, to be voted on in Sept., would be
scored (analyzed?) prior to the vote. Weiner himself said on WNYC it would be scored.
scored/analyzed
Here's single-payer advocate DrSteveB on the difference between "score" and "analyze":
Every apathetic citizen is a silent enlistee in the cause of inverted totalitarianism.—Sidney Wolin
scored
it's a short time frame, and the powers that be are not going to want health care
deformreform derailed by something so logical and simple and affordable as medicare for all.i'm betting the bill gets scored instead of analyzed. i will, however, continue to hope that it gets a full analysis.
Oh, sorry, you can't verify yet...
No problemo. Thanks for passing on. :)
Medicare for All is Civil Rights
I finally read Letsgetitdone's excellent post
I disagreed with only one thing:
On what basis do we conclude that effect was unintended?
what if your congressman used to be Newt's chief of staff?
No. Wait. That's Johnny Isaackson, the senator from GA. My congressman is Dr. Phil Gingrey, every bit as bad or worse. I send emails every now and then, and have demonstrated at his office a couple times. You can make some yahoos hear you but you cannot make them listen.
