A Modest Proposal

And we don't even have to eat any babies!

From hctomorrow at FDL:

It is grossly unfair to require both men and women to purchase a product, then sabotage said product so that it is harmful only to women. Since we have, as a nation, apparently decided that it is somehow immoral to provide proper and affordable women’s healthcare in either the public option or the Exchange, it is only just that we exempt women from the mandate.

That's an opt-out I could support.

I just left a comment.

just wait

until you see those 'young invincible' plans. W/ those deductibles, contraception will be another out-of-pocket. You'd think that since politicians are so concerned about abortion rates that they'd make contraception a loss leader, but no.

they AREN'T concerned about abortion rates

well, some people are.

the people driving the discussion though are all about valuing women chiefly as incubators. they don't want abortions or birth control to be legal.

I'm so old I remember R v W reported by Walter Cronkite

and I guarandamntee you, the Stupak amendment is a pure unadulterated DELIGHT to a handful of people in this country.

Conservative Catholic men, including the Pope, are at the top of the list.
Mormon and FLDS men are close behind.
Republican men in general are filling in the ranks.

Pro-life is nothing of the kind. It's anti-

anti-woman
anti-contraception
anti-freedom

anti-equality.

i don't remember walter cronkite's reporting

though i clearly remember reading the magazine and newspaper articles describing the back alley abortions. horrifying.

Forced-birth is my way of saying it

I refuse to use their wording, because they are not about that at all, since they are against health care for all, welfare for the needy, and pro-war.

do you think there's a possibility of a class action suit?

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems as if the mandate could be subject to a very serious legal challenge on the grounds that it offers preferential treatment to one gender over the other.

While that sounds like I'm thinking with a cool and logical head, let me hasten to add that I am so totally disgusted by this turn of events that I can hardly form words to speak.

i'm not a lawyer either

but i don't see why not.

otoh, i'm not especially sanguine about what might come out of such a suit making it to the supreme court that decided that women are fragile and have to be protected from the ickiness of 'partial birth' abortion.

My message to all of the young and/or female P.O.ers

...who dumped on the single payer activists:

First they came for the communist; and I did not speak out because I was not a communist...

My point: until there is an actual movement and just basic fricking decency for core groups that are left of center, we're all at risk.

I doubt the lesson will be learned.
