My Wal-Mart Saga, Episode I

We'll see if this goes anywhere, but a week or so ago, while comparison-shopping online, I found that Wal-Mart had the cheapest price on an item I needed several of, so the price difference added up.

I used their "Site to Store" option, so I'd save the shipping fee. I paid for the product online, and was told I'd be notified within a couple of weeks, when the item arrived in a nearby store.

It arrived sooner than expected, and I went the the store to pick it up.

Here's what I wrote to them in my complaint:

I went to pick up my purchase at your store in xyz, MA, order # zyx, at around 8:45PM last night.

Despite asking countless store clerks, getting them to page for help (they did call – I heard the announcements), repeatedly pressing the call-service button at the Site to Store desk, and even picking up the store phone myself, it was not until 45 minutes later that someone arrived to check out my order... an order which I had already paid for online!

I kept wondering if I started putting merchandise in my pocket or smashing it against the wall, if anyone would arrive.

I waved at the security cameras in the manner of a stranded person on a desert island hoping an airplane pilot would see me.

I tried leaving the Site to Store room and shouting "Hellooo, does anyone work here?" and nothing.

In the end, a nice stockboy got my items out of the back room, but he wasn't authorized to sign out my order until a manager (I think he was a manager) arrived, a full three-quarters of an hour after I entered the store, which BTW was not at all busy at that late hour.

In case things weren't already surreal (I felt like I was stuck in the movie Career Opportunities, except it wasn't at Target. And there was no Jennifer Connelly.), then came the response at 1:27AM (outsource much?).

Though the reply had my original subject line, and of course my e-mail address, its entire contents consisted of a thread where four different Wal-Mart "service" people fail to solve the problem of a woman they repeatedly call "Joanne" (Her name is actually "Josephine," though perhaps everyone knew her as "Nancy." To be fair, "Joanne" appears in her e-mail address. But, still, getting her name wrong at every turn is a nice touch.).

As I've said before, one doesn't have to hate on Wal-Mart for its exploitative practices -- that's a personal and political decision. You can hate it just for being one of the shittiest large businesses in the world. It is the MySpace of retail stores, a place that sucks out loud but still keeps more than afloat. They're working hard to get me to reduce my visits from about two times a year to zero. Well done, corporate America, well done!

A happy coincidence

Now you've got two reasons for avoiding them: bad service AND exploitative labor practices. Me, I don't set foot in Wal-Mart, mainly because it makes me feel claustrophobic and creepy. But I am a member of Sam's Club, to my eternal shame.

downstreamer

me too

"Me, I don’t set foot in Wal-Mart, mainly because "it makes me feel claustrophobic and creepy..."

i didn't know there was another who felt the same way.

there IS something distinctly unpleasant about the aura of walmart stores.

it's strange, isn't it, that a corporation could convey that emotion?

Absolutely

They may as well put up a sign that says "Abandon hope all ye who enter here."

This is not snobbery. I don't need fancy. I just want not-degrading.

Americans Are Obsessed with Low Prices

in part because companies are obsessed with low wages so they can give Americans those low prices which Americans demand because of low wages...

Remember when Wal-Mart's claim to fame was that they sold only - or primarily - American-made goods? At some point, they decided - and I'm betting this was based on what customers were buying - that cutting prices was more important than their emphasis on American-made goods. Of course, I'm sure it never occurred to Wal-Mart that one of the reasons people are obsessed with low prices is that they get paid wages like the ones Wal-Mart pays.

I'm so glad Wal-Mart is getting into health care

Here. That seems so, so right. Imagine waving to a security camera from your bed of pain to get a nurse to come!

[x] Any (D) in the general. [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Retail healthcare is very double-edged

It makes routine care more accessible, but it also skims available talent from full-service community clinics.

And, of course, it's a corporatist Band-Aid that's part of the nationwide punt on Universal Healthcare.

Options

I find that my rural hardware store no longer carries some items, advising me that I have to go to Walmart. There are still some options, but avoiding the place altogether is getting more difficult.

If you live in

Michigan, Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky, try Meijer. They have fairly decent prices(it's where my poor self shops), and their employees are union.

Bill Clinton for First Dude!!!

" though perhaps everyone knew her as “Nancy."

I love the Firesign Theatre nod! Man, I used to love them!

"There's something fishy about the butler, I think he's a Pisces, probably working for scale."

Or, then again, it could be a Beatles reference (who inspired the FT take). Either way - brings back memories.

I was thinking Beatles

I missed Firesign the first time around, except for a little by osmosis. I have a feeling that you had to be there, but who knows, maybe one day I should try listening to some of their stuff. Where would you start?

The inexpensive way for now

would be to listen to a couple of things on YouTube. Here's a link to more of the "Nick Danger" clip above. http://youtube.com/watch?v=q5XfXECpU6w

But remember, don't look at the picture - just listen to it. Indulge in your favorite beverage or smoke. That way you'll be able to bring back the feeling of the old time radio broadcasts that they mimicked so well.

I liked their early stuff the best. Here's a link to their albums: http://www.google.com/musica?aid=uJYqWAE...

With the emotional roller-coaster that we've all been on for the last few months it's nice to be able to relax and enjoy something on the lighter side!
