New Botulism Recall: Green Beans (Canada + Maybe Wisconsin?)

Very odd, very small story in Toronto Star I just saw, and post without having time to research further yet.

Loblaws Inc. is recalling No name French Style Green Beans because they may contain a dangerous bacteria.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says toxins produced by the bacteria (Clostridium) may cause botulism.

The affected product is in 398 millilitre cans, bearing the UPC code 60383 03310, and distributed in Ontario and in western provinces.

The affected cans also bear the following codes:

See link if you’re in or near Ontario. Otherwise just note the following:

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the beans.

The federal agency says larger recall involving French Style Green Beans manufactured in Wisconsin is under way in the United States.

Anybody else hear anything about a green bean botulism recall in the US, specifically Wisconsin? I know this bridge collapse is sucking up literally all the air on US cable teebee but sheesh, you’d think they could take the last-three-minute per hour segment normally given over to Fluffy News and make some mention of this matter.

A Sandoval County NM man is in critical condition with botulism

Unknown whether he had some of the chili, or some of the green beans, or something else.
Castleberry’s closed their plant as part of the effort to clean this up.
What is Loblaw doing?

Spread the word, folks. Botulism kills people.

I've got an idea!

Let’s deregulate the food supply!

What could go wrong?

Watch the dollar stores

I see off-brand Canadian stuff in there all the time.

Damn, I forgot about Dollar Stores

Which is particularly ironic since they just (about a year ago) opened one up in my little town here. To the great irritation, I suspect, of the grocery owner who had been covering the local need for most of the things they sell execpt clothing (blegh) and small appliances.

Will have to go hit them tomorrow. Lambert, you and others in the Far Northern Reaches of the US should probably stick to frozen green beans for awhile (as if you weren’t in any case) since indeed there is no way of knowing how far these “no-name” cans might have gotten. Even I have heard the name of Loblaws and I haven’t been in Canada in 30 years almost (sob) so they’re probably a far-flung outfit.

"Sure, botulism might be bad..."

“… but shouldn’t we wait to make a final judgment until General Petraeus delivers his report in September?”

Loblaws: They're still around?

They used to have some stores in Western New York (1960s) until Tops supermarkets (reputedly mob-run) put them out of business.
They continue to flourish in Canada, and in the 1970s had famous Canadian William Shatner as their spokesperson. There’s a reference to his famous tag-line from their TV commercials in McLean and McLean’s “Taking the “O” out of Country” album:

“But, by gosh, the price is right.”
