Newtie, Newtie, Newtie ... there you go again

Gingrich, pondering a White House bid, claims he's sick of Georgie W.'s vacations (and Congress's, too.) Quote: "As an American, I am sickened that the political leadership of America could continue to go on vacation and do nothing," he said. "Why are the August vacations for the president and the Congress more precious than the lives of young Americans who are being killed because of government incompetence and inaction." But it isn't our soldiers he means -- no, no. To him,"The federal government's incompetence, timidity and uncoordinated efforts to identify and deport criminal illegal aliens have had devastating consequences for innocent Americans," Gingrich said, in a newsletter.

Gingrich said that the "war here at home" against illegal immigrants is "even more deadly than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Do amphibians have a lizard backbrain?

And is it politically correct to ask?

My firm policy is to never trust an adult whose nickname is some kind of animal. Bull. Cooter. Dog. Newt. Kitty. Snake. Odds are, they’re up to no good. Apologies to anyone out there with an animal nickname who is trustworthy, I absolutely believe you so long as you grow up and immediately get yourself a respectable new one. Or, here’s a thought, use your given name; compared to an intellectually-evolutionary-creationist-take-your-pick-of-perspectives inferior species, how much worse could it be? And really, what is there enhancing in high office about any childhood nickname? Are “Irv” or “Lew” more foolish than “Scooter” for a grown man in an important governmental position?

Sarah, well done, when I heard this on radio earlier I absolutely spasmed and couldn’t wait to write about it but here you are and nicely said. An alternative all-purpose Gingrich headline: Elderly Lying Adulterer Opens Mouth; Noise Comes Out.

How deeply hypocritical, idiotic, foolish, failed and consistently wrong does a person have to sink to fall below the acceptability level for media coverage? Newt Gingrich has a political following? Anyone actually listens to this man? Shouldn’t an investigation of What’s Wrong With These People be the news item?

Jeeze Louise, from your link:

“The measure should order the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security to outsource the development of an identification system to check the legal status of felons and have it up and running by Jan. 1, 2008, he said.”

This guy actually does get me to fretting.

High on any list of how the Democratic Party is superior to the Republican Party; Newt Gingrich.

:) Thank you, bringiton. I was hoping somebody'd read the link

because, seriously, FBI/DSH outsourcing wigged me right into the stratosphere.

I also hoped my headline would subliminally invoke St. Ronnie's "There you go again" solecism, aimed at the press of the day.

Sometimes, it's better to remind people of the bad old days, no?

Stardate for Sarah

I’ll bring up here because I can’t remember which thread we were on before, must adjust serotonin levels if I can remember where I put my meds.

The quote for Kirk

"All, right - it's instinctive. But the instinct can be fought. We're human beings, with the blood of a million savage years on our hands. But we can stop it! We can admit we're killers, but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes. Knowing that you're not going to kill...today.”

is from A Taste of Armageddon, Season One Episode #23, and begins on Stardate 3192.1 (Earthyear 2267).

The actual line is spoken about 24 hours later in the plot timeline so if one allows 1000 stardate intervals per Earth Year then the exact time of the quote would be right around 3195. Am on the hunt for a DVD with the episode, know where one is but haven't gotten hold of it to take a look. Are we getting Trekkie enough here yet?

Rodenberry was a strange duck, but the work was fabulous. The anarchic aspect of Kirk’s character, violation of the Prime Directive damn near every episode, original claim to fame breaking the boundaries of his Starfleet exam, absolutely fabulous. Rules are for fools.

Did you like Galaxy Quest? Absolutely killed me. How about the Firefly series? I thought it was brilliant. Can we talk sci-fi in some appropriate thread without me getting myself in trouble? (Last question rhetorical, the answer is of course not :-)

Absolutely, Bringiton -- do you want to elevate this to a post?

By Grapthar's Hammer, I adored Galaxy Quest.

It nearly redeemed Alan Rickman (whose work in Quigley Down Under sets the standard for banal villainy -- well, actually, on-screen; in life, I think Rove's got it trademarked) for me. Of course, he's now Sirius Snape, so ... nearly's all he gets. It'll be interesting to see if Tim Allen can make as effective (and thoroughgoingly self-parodying) comeback as Shatner, won't it?
And Firefly? Brilliant is a major understatement ... Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Joss Whedon ... spaceships and horses... (swoons)

Oh for pity's sake ...

even lambert can't be all politix all the time.

And while I'm thinking about it -- you may be onto something. If we want to ensure Edwards' deference is directed properly, we'll have to put the whole electorate in the position of being the sitting Court before whom he presents his case.

My bet is he'll be fine with that.

Sarah, I agree

That's why I was so encouraged that Elizabeth Edwards went on Kos and said what she said (and also why I took a screen dump of it...)
