Of course, Cheney's statement is the rankest and most virulent authoritarianism imaginable:

In the delusional minds of the unilateral executive theorists deep in Cheney's bunker, it's up to the chief executive alone--let's reserve the word "President" for elected officials, OK?--to determine what the troops "mission" is to begin with.

Then, everybody else has to fall in line. Congress needs to sign the blank check, the voters need to go shopping and "sacrifice" by watching TV, etc.

Of course, if the mission turns out to be the greatest strategic disaster in American history, getting the troops out of harm's way is the best way to support them, and our country, too.
