The transition team has been told to hire Republicans at all levels of government, not just as token cabinet appointments. " 'Team of Rivals' has become a term of art here," says a senior Obama staffer, who refused to be identified discussing strategy. "It's less about Lincoln than a reinforcement of his theme that we need to move forward and get beyond the old partisan politics." This staffer says that Obama and his top aides are wary of over-hyping the Lincoln comparison. He also says that Obama believes he can—by force of character—bring Republicans into the fold without sacrificing Democratic principles. "I don't think he looks at this and says, 'Because I appoint Republicans, I have to compromise my positions'," says the aide.
Nope. No comment.
You're not going to get me to say a fucking thing. Na ga happen.
UPDATE Irony alert! Irony alert! I love this quote:
"I don't think he looks at this and says, 'Because I appoint Republicans, I have to compromise my positions'," says the aide.
And you know what? I absolutely agree. That aide is right on the money, in so many, many ways.

No kidding.
The aide is more correct than he-or-she even knows. Compromise
means actually having to betray what you believe in...
I guess that this is "change that his liberal poseur fanbase couldn't have possibly believe he's making", no? lol
Today, we are all Obaman Democrats!
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
I'm not going to comment, either
Why look a gift miracle in the mouth? Turning water into wine is nothing compared with converting today's Republicans into honorable public servants. O happy day!
Dude, There Are Already Republicans at All Levels of Govt.
Doesn't anyone in the incoming Obama Administration read the Washington Post. Not to mention the hacktackular hirings of people like Monica Goodling of right-wingers directly into career jobs. It's kind of hard to enforce antitrust laws if you have an entire division staffed by people who don't believe in them.
I'm sure some of the folks hired will prove themselves perfectly capable, loyal government employees, just as many Democratic civil servants did their jobs under this Administration, but some of them won't be. And those folks will be a problem by leaking to the Hill, the press, and generally undermining the system.
And while we're on the civil service, I've heard from friends that there are a few Democrats in the civil service who survived the purges at the Departments. Now, how do you suppose they proved their loyalty to the Bushies? It wouldn't have anything to do with those purges, do you suppose?
"Do what you feel in your heart to be right -- for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't. " - Eleanor Roosevelt
& this tells them they're all safe,
and it'll be business as usual. ugh.
cmon, kids: get with the program
we're a "center right" country, and even tho more people voted for obama than the republican, they voted for center right policies. aren't you paying attention?
we don't have a "left" and "right" party dichotomy anymore. we have a "center right" and "fascist/theocrat" one. anyone to the left of all that needs to realize: you don't matter and you need to shut up and stop whining. and pay the vig.
that's really our only productive role, so far as Our Leaderz are concerned.
oh, and i'm curious: what democrats did Bush install in his
administration, again? i'm sure it was a long, long list i've just forgotten.
just 1 i know of-- Norm Mineta --
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con... 06 --- "Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, who oversaw the tightening of airport security after the 2001 terrorist attacks and is the lone Democrat in President Bush's Cabinet, will step down early next month, the White House announced yesterday."
that's how it's supposed to be-- if they must do it at all -- 1 token member of the other party only.
Who needs political parties when a strong personality will win
the the presidency? Who needs those identifiers, those party labels? What do they stand for anyway? If the MCM blesses a candidate, most likely that one will win. The MCM has so much to answer for, but pleasing and winning the MCM seems to be of utmost importance for winning the presidency.
Which parts of the Republican Party's philosophy will Obama accept? Reject?
Cornell West was on WNYC this morning (fifth segment) and said the Age of Reagan has ended and the Age of Obama has begun. Whether Obama realizes it or not is another question, added West.
West was very disturbed about the the Emanuel appointment and the possible Summers nomination to Treasury. Says he doesn't trust them. Feels he can trust Holder.
Jeralyn at Talk Left, however, has some deep concerns about Holder's work on minimun sentencing for marijuana, among other things. But she likes his stand on guns.
I have no idea how Obama will actually govern--I have fears. I hope they will be proven wrong.
