By the time the president realized the minority party wanted nothing but tax cuts and spending cuts, it was too late to make the bill more ambitious.
Oopsie. Too bad reasoning from false premises sometimes has irrreversible, real-life consequences, eh?

got exactly what he wanted. The final bill was almost identical to the bill he first put out, which the House had improved, then the Senate with Republican cover, put it back to being basically Obama's bill. The idea that Obama would have done a better bill if he had realized Republicans were nasty strikes me as naive.
