Obama's cutting abortion radio ads in Virginia, Milwaukie, Colorado, and Iowa. They're narrated by a nurse practitioner, and they go a little something like this:
"Let me tell you: If Roe vs. Wade is overturned, the lives and health of women will be put at risk. That's why this election is so important.
"John McCain's out of touch with women today. McCain wants to take away our right to choose. That's what women need to understand. That's how high the stakes are.
"As president, John McCain will make abortion illegal."
[exchange from "Meet the Press" in which McCain tells Tim Russert that he favors "a constitutional amendment to ban all abortions."]
"We can't let John McCain take away our right to choose. We can't let him take us back."
This is all well and good, but I'm going to need some re-clarification of Doe v Bolton from the Constitutional law professor.
Mental health exceptions? Never heard of 'em.
And on Leavitt's HHS rules defining contraception that prevents implantation as abortion, he signed a letter. He signed a letter, people!
Way to get tough, you fresh-faced progressive you.

And, sorry for the hijack, but, does anyone know where I can find a list of who voted for and against the nomination of Alito and Roberts?
damon: start here
the only thing of value from the wapo other than froomkin. and iirc, obama said 'yes' to alito but not to roberts.
oops! my bad, damon
he said no to alito. i confess i get confused at times when it comes to the whole "real" vs "preemptive" voting they do; "cloture" votes and suchlike. it's always hard to tell which vote really matters the most.
Obama Said No, But He Undermined Filibuster Efforts
on Alito. Damn, I wish this site had a search engine because I did this comment awhile ago where I linked to all the ways Obama has undermined his support for reproductive freedom while technically voting the right way (when he bothered to vote).
And he was going to vote for Roberts until his advisors told him it would hurt him in a Presidential primary contest.
"Roe"hypnol
A drug used to put "people" to sleep..... Ok, nevermind, that's not going anywhere good.

Does Anyone Think He'd Be Cutting These Ads
if Sarah Palin weren't McCain's running mate?
They can't quite bring themselves to ask for women's votes, that would be demeaning to have to lower yourself to ask women for something, but they do seem to be worried about women's votes. Good.
I know, right? The content
I know, right? The content of the ad is exactly the same fresh, new information I've been getting from his fanboi concern trolls, which is the same club the DNC's been bludgeoning women into line with since the 1970s while they've let the conservatives snip off a provision here, add a conscience clause there...
If the bar is set at not overturning Roe, we've got problems.
Like I said, they can't provide affirmative reasons for voting
for Obama/Biden, but lots of negative reasons for his opponents.
What do we get that's more than what we have now?
'Cause they're really not good at holding the line...
And what is Obama going to do?
I find it curious the ads only state what McCain will allegedly do. The Obama campaign only implies Obama will reproductive freedoms, but does not commit the candidate to doing so explicitly. So why doesn't Obama come out squarely in favor of legalized abortion?
Re: Alito
That's exactly right. Since the Dems were still in the minority, the only realistic chance to stop Alito was through a filibuster. That was the vote that mattered, the actual floor vote was a foregone conclusion. So Obama was basically not greatly offended by the idea of Alito being on the court, but at the same time did not want to have his fingerprints on the confirmation. The story of his political life.
What Obama's Going to Do
He's going to not be McCain. Woop-de-doo! He'd let us have some rights to make our own decisions!
He won't overturn Roe altogether (neither will McCain, because he can't), but if those church groups he courts want to see more restrictions, he's not going to say no to them. I'm not seeing a big difference between the two main candidates on this one.
Do You All Think?
That the Democrats are going to find, this year, that most women aren't single-issue voters? You know, that you can't beat up on women, and then try to get them back by threatening them with the "you've got nowhere else to go" schtick. Also, do the Dems ever explain what happens, if by some incredible unlikely storm, Roe is overturned?
I hope so
but it's not looking real likely. Not when these radio ads are Obama's strongest stance on women's rights so far, and it's pretty obvious that all they're for is to bludgeon any stray female voters back in line. From all I've heard from him, Roe v Wade is the only female-related legislation he's aware of.
They'd probably blame it on women. It won't be overturned though. It'll just be slowly killed by a thousand cuts. A mental health exception here. A conscience clause there. *snip snip* And if Obama's president, he obviously won't do a damn thing to stop that process. Because he doesn't give a shit. If he cared about reproductive freedom and women's rights, there are several pieces of legislation he'd be taking a stand on right now.
No
What I was implying is that the overturning of Roe turns the issues back to the states. It's often always implied by the left that abortion would instantly become illegal, everywhere.
Back to the states just
Back to the states just like it was in the 1950s. Hooray.
Not good enough.
