[Democrats] want to allow bankruptcy judges to rewrite mortgages to ease the burden on consumers who are facing foreclosure.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Obama said the provision was a priority, but one that he'd be willing to sacrifice in the interest of a bipartisan deal.
He said he told Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the majority leader, that the measure "is probably something that we shouldn't try to do in this piece of legislation." ["Tomorrow tomorrow, I love you tomorrow, You're only a day away, The sun'll come out, tomorrow, Bet your bottom dollar, that tomorrow, There'll be sun..."]
Man, that's some fucking priority! Well, I guess that question I keep asking is answered:
And we get?
Nada. Zip. Zilch. Nothing.
NOTE Meanwhile, contrast the HOLC proposal put forward by the Democratic candidate who actually got the most Democratic votes....

Ponies for everyone except
Us.
I was hoping he was in a hotel room reading My Pet Goat. We'd be better off if that was all he was doing.
IS there a Democrat who is actually speaking for us?
we'll have to see who votes NO
--i'd say Dodd is pretty much the only one who has publicly stated so at this point. Everyone else is either for it, or won't draw lines in the sand at all.
preemptively folding--again--
pathetic.
(but he'll probably get an extra million or 2 at this week's big money fundraisers)
Oh lordy. Not again.
well...that may be why he is reluctant to say Democrat.
He isn't one.
I wonder who scares Wall St. more--probably McCain bcz he's rich
enough and old enough to tell them to fuck off.
No that he'd necessarily do much else, but I bet he'd be willing to take on the Fat Cats.
Obama? Nah, he's got his future ahead of him and he needs to rack the bucks for his old age and his family.
And has he ever explained why he's a Democrat? What being a Democrat means to him?
Other than only way to get election in Chicago?
Mortgage assistance--can do some other time.
Healthcare--probably won't be able to do very soon; maybe some other time.
What else?
ending Bush's taxcuts--
he already said that if we're in recession, he won't restore the previous rates--and that means nothing gets done for us at all.
T/U, amberglow-I'd already forgotten about that little turnabout
Holy moly, we are so fucked.
Is there still time to make Hillary our nominee?
Those tax cuts
IIRC, the wording on that Obama quote was incredibly murky -- partly because the tax cuts are sunsetted, so it's not clear what "restore" would actually mean -- keep them in place, or roll them back. And AP's paraphrasing was awful, which is why I didn't make a big deal of it at the time.
Can you find a real quote?

here's the AP story--
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080907/ap_o... -- " Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush's tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.
Nevertheless, Obama has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, as Republican John McCain advocates. Instead, Obama wants to push for his promised tax cuts for the middle class, he said in a broadcast interview aired Sunday.
"Even if we're still in a recession, I'm going to go through with my tax cuts," Obama said. "That's my priority."
What about increasing taxes on the wealthy?
"I think we've got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now," Obama said on "This Week" on ABC. "The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we're fragile." ... "
He was vague and evaded answering and made it dependent on the economy-- which means he won't stick to it at all -- for me at least.
The wording is really weird
IIRC (correct me) the tax cuts are sunsetted. If nobody does anything, they expire.
So, "delay rescinding" and "no plans to extend" just flat out contradict each other, don't they? Am I wrong on this?
I agree with your conclusion, but I'm not sure I agree with your premises.
Thanks for digging this up/.

they totally contradict, which means
to me that his actual words alone should be given weight rather than the journalist's--and he explicitly gives a pre-condition--he says that the state of the economy will determine when and if the status of them changes, no?
plus,
not taking public funding means he's more and more beholden to the wealthy with each and every fundraiser. They are bankrolling his campaign--not 10 and 25-dollar people.
note that both the phrases
you pulled were not his exact words, but the article writer's.
It's Playing Chicken with the Troops All Over Again
Just like old times with Senator Post-Partisanship.
You know, I don't even blame him because this is who he has always fucking been. I blame the asshats calling themselves progressives who decided to ignore who he is and instead praise who they wanted him to be. Here's a hint to the A-list, when Andy Sullivan and Chris Matthews are praising your guy and Paul Krugman is criticizing him, you might want to step back and take a second look. And, of course, I blame the party because this is the guy they chose. This is what they wanted.
And it's the second time he's fucked over Chris Dodd. I wonder if Dodd has noticed or if he's too busy celebrating the awesomeness that is Obama.

just wondering...
exactly what sort of bill would pass, and be signed by the president, that did not have bipartisan support?
Joe Bob
no kind--which is preferable to this horror--
instead of saying that this shouldn't happen at all--or shouldn't happen before the election, etc, Obama is saying it will happen, and it will not include a single thing for taxpayers.
I want my pony!
Where is my pony?

the only pony is the pride
you'll get in seeing Obama's historic and ground-breaking presidency in the flesh--apparently proving that there's no more racism or something and that this is a fabulous country for all, amen.
that's it--that's all he offers anyone.
That sounds a little meta to me, amberglow
I remember being promised a pony.
Are you sure I'm not going to get a pony?

that's your pony, and mine-- and his gift to the whole
wide world--aren't you thrilled? it's sparkly and new and different, and a symbol of our nation's sparkly new and different image -- exemplified in Obama himself.
But that's a symbolic pony
I want a real pony.
I bet Hank Paulson's golfing buddies get real ponies -- lots of 'em. Where is my pony?

in Obama.
that's it, hon....sorry.
Feh. No analysis, no 10 point plan. We. Get. Nothing. Did
someone have the audacity to hope that Hillary could still be our candidate? Keep on dreamin'. She's only good for campaigning for him.
I love this job!
Jawbone, I see Mcain as a friend of wall street. Didn't he and
Phil Graham play a big part in deregulating wall street?
I love this job!
I love this job!
i don't think he is anymore--
after Keating 5, and McCain/Feingold, he showed that their interests weren't his priorities.
and his campaign is not based on their money either--Obama's is.
of course, he's a Republican-- so is automatically big business friendly.
Just when i think
I couldn't hate him any more....
Progressive my arse.

-- "Former Fannie Mae chairman Jim Johnson was dumped from Obama's vice presidential search team, but he's still playing a behind-the-scenes role on the campaign.
Former Senator Tom Daschle, a top Obama backer, emailed a select list this afternoon that he and Johnson would be leading a briefing intended largely for Clinton's campaign brain trust next month. ..." -- http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0...
What if we* didn't hop on the Unity Pony so quickly?
Many people jumped on the Unity
train right after Hillary conceded. Since Hillary's concession, most went on the "McCain is evil so we have to support Obama at all costs" train. What if, rather than doing that, we took a deep breath and said we would withhold judgment about supporting Obama to see how he stands firm or not?
Pols as ambitious as Obama understand one thing: winning votes. We made it clear that we hated McCain so much that he had pretty much free reign to do as he wanted. That's exactly what he's doing. I blame us* more than him since we told him it was OK. If we withheld our* support, perhaps we could have had some bargaining power. But we gave it up. And the continued "McCain/Palin = Evil incarnate" line only serves to continue to give Obama more power to do as he wishes. We can complain about giving up our influence, but that still does not mean we didn't voluntarily give it up.
I can dig up my specific quotes at the time about giving up our negotiating powers by jumping on board so easily, but it's not about me, its about how we all are paying the price now. I'll point out that the condescension and bullying that we still see now is pretty similar to what I experienced back in June. It wasn't about being a deadender or racist or too infatuated with Hillary, it was about trying to preserve our influence in these debates. I make my comments now for the same reason I made them in June.
* I tend to use "we/us" in my comments because I like to think of it as a group (or "movement") problem. We're all in this together blah blah blah.
