Obama the Slave Owner

Kristol. Wow, just when I thought I'd seen everything. You know, applying the "wingers always project onto others what they really think and feel" rule, it's increasingly clear that Kristol is more than just a neocon, he's an outright facist.

Don't worry Bill. When the revolution comes, I'll give you to my grandmother. She's too old to whip you very hard.

Bill the Ignorant

Wow. So much historical illiteracy, so little time.

During this period Abraham Lincoln WAS appeasing the slaveholders as well. He made many "Can't we all get along" speeches between 1858 and 1861.

Neither Lincoln nor Douglas were in any way talking about abolition in the late 1850s. In fact, as Lincoln memorably said, "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."

I'm so tired of folks who are historically illiterate trying to score political points by lying about American history.

but tom- bill is a harvard grad!

so he must know more about history than you do. that's why he's an expert and on TV all the time, while you're just some blogger who actually reads and remembers silly things like context and historical documents.

And that Lincoln comment was an LTE

for those who think they don't do any good or are instantly forgotten.

Lincoln to Horace Greely, editor New York Tribune, Aug. 22 1862. In response to Greeley's editorial of 2 days prior known as "The Prayer of the Twenty Millions" in which he (Greeley) said "We complain that the Union cause has suffered...from mistaken deference to Rebel slavery...All attempts to put down the Rebellion and at the same time uphold its inciting cause are preposterous and futile."

Worst thing about the RW nut cases who are fucking constantly making Civil War analogies/apologia for Bush's various fuckups, is that they are always careful to scrape away any context for the items quoted. And trust me I've been following this for years as an inevitable side effect of searching Google for the words "Civil War" on a daily basis.

I am personally agnostic on Obama for the time being but his coming-out in Springfield yesterday was fucking brilliant on several levels, summed up as "framing" and "theater." Nice to see a Democrat who can work the machinery that way. :)
