Ian wonders of it would make good Canadian policy to more aggresively recruit Americans who are feeling shut out by crony Bush policies. Goddess love him, he thinks that gays specifically would be a great target group. The idea is that Canada is a small nation, relatively speaking, and immigration is the engine of greatness in a nation. So much talent is denied a chance to prove itself in the US, mainly because these days, from corporate office to government building, loyalty to Der Leader (Bush or his surrogate) is what matters. My friends in corporate America complain that their CEOs are just like Bush, and that the only way to get ahead anymore is to step over the dead bodies of your coworkers after you’ve stabbed them in the back. Certainly we’ve got all kinds of evidence about how Bush has ruined government employment as a career option for liberals and decent people, and there are legions of working and middle class folks who find themselves in American dead ends. Readers- is Canada the next great frontier of North America? The reality of global climate change seems to suggest that it won’t be as cold…
Oh, Canada!

Front page
We have welcomed
We have welcomed southerners here for generations. All across eastern Canada are Provinces and towns and cities that celebrate their Loyalist hertitage. Loyal to Britain that is, dated to the time of your war of sucession.
If you had stayed, you would have a Parliamentary system. One of the chief benefits would be that governments here fall all the time. Tossing out the Prime Minister is a National Sport, near to hockey in popularity. Contrast that to years of handwringing about “impeaching” the worst president of all time, whose moral and legal crimes are a source of outrage to most Americans, and source of shame to all.
We welcomed draft resisters, people you defined as slaves and lovely young couples who just wanted to get married. We have a national police force, btw, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, RCMP, and in rural Canada last year two of them married each other in a well publicized ceremony. While there are many women serving in the RCMP, none where in the main part of that party.
You have a football player, who admits, nay celebrates his use of marijuana. In punishment, he was given a year off, which he is spending playing the vastly surperior game of Canadian football (just three downs for example), in a country where the biggest story, of late, about ’pot’ is the wide outrage, shared in the press, about government gouging in their price for government grown marijuana. “Its the same price as street drugs!!” the editorials protest.
Your Head of State has all the power, no moral authority at all and membership is restricted to rich white guys. Our head of state is a Hatian refugee, with no power, and great moral authority to speek about civil rights and racism, which she does, all the time.
All this is fun. But the reallity is we also have problems, and our activists work day and night to stop our right from wrecking our social programs. Our progressives fight for justice for First Nations, clean water, land claims and better distributed medical care. Our New Democrats struggle to increase our foreign aid, reverse global warming and set up a national childcare program.
I’m sure we could use your help in these struggles, it doesn’t always go well.
But here’s the thing - you could help a lot more if you worked twice as hard down there. Letting people who were once african americans live here in the 1800’s was all well and good, but ending slavery was better.
Joining britain in its war against fascism, years before you southerners did, fills our collective hearts with pride, but Roosevelt democrats preventing the Republicans from letting the German war machine win, was more effective eventually in stopping the Nazis.
Having a much more diverse media that provides us with enough information that we were all shocked, in 2001, that anyone thought that Iraq was involved in any way with the twin towers, is wonderful. But our marching against the war, in twenty below, didn’t do squat. Reforming your media, that would be something better.
So. Stay home. We love you guys, but you’ve got work to do. Come on up for holidays, mountains and calm seaside vistas, but lets see some more elbow grease in the off season.
