or perhaps as some associate with ’confused.’ the rest are looking directly at the viewer or up (heavenward). and yes, it’s on purpose.

anyone remember the SCLM piece done on maryscott oconner? the photographer took several nice pics of her, she saw them before the article was published. the photographer later told her that the editor made the choice of which one to use. it was the worst of them, the one the photographer never meant to use, the one with her eyes slightly crossed. mr subliminal: crazy blogger meme propagated. same deal here.
