Pantry cleanout: Kroger recalls potato salad, Feds warn on Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer beef, all tainted with e. coli

Just in time for the Labor Day weekend! So be sure to echeck the sell-by dates and brands before you pack up the food for your picnic. CNN:

Kroger Co. said Friday the grocery chain was recalling its store-brand "Southern-Style" and "Mustard" potato salads because of concerns they have been tainted with E. coli bacteria, according to state agricultural officials.

Cincinnati-based Kroger has stores in 31 states, many under different banners. Glynn said potato salads sold in Ralphs, Fred Meyer, and QFC stores weren't affected. Those stores are mainly in western states.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture and Kroger advised consumers not to eat the potato salads if they have a "best if used by" date of Sept. 5.

Beef, too:
CNN:

Federal and state health officials issued a consumer alert Thursday after nine people were sickened by contaminated beef.

A day before the start of what historically is a popular weekend for grilling, officials urged consumers to check the beef in their freezers and make sure it doesn't include possibly tainted meat.

The 41,205 pounds (approximately 20 tons) of beef identified as possibly tainted is no longer on store shelves, because the sell-by dates have already expired.

Authorities identified the suspect products as 16-ounce packages of "Northwest Finest 7% Fat, Natural Ground Beef" with UPC code label "752907 600127" and 16-ounce packages of "Northwest Finest 10% Fat, Organic Ground Beef" with expiration dates between August 1 to August 8.

The beef was sold in Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer and other stores.

Nine people have been sickened -- six in Washington, two in Oregon, and one in Idaho -- by the beef, which is contaminated with E. coli bacteria, state health officials reported.

But don't worry! The e. coli Republicans have the situation well in hand, and only a few people will have to sicken and die before the magic of the marketplace takes over and does that job that food inspectors used to do before the Republicans drowned government in the bathtub...

Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
