Patrick Leahy needs to stop playing Mister Nice Guy

We flip, flip flip to page A03.... WaPo:

Leahy (D-Vt.) told reporters he is giving Gonzales until late next week to revise his testimony about the surveillance program or he will ask Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine to conduct a perjury inquiry: "I'll ask the inspector general to determine who's telling the truth."

What's wrong with tomorrow?

Why give the Republicans a chance to get their stories straight?

Fiddling while the constitution burns

Your questions:

What’s wrong with tomorrow?

Why give the Republicans a chance to get their stories straight?

To paraphrase the Attorney General of the United States: Those are good questions.

What happened to plans for

What happened to plans for a special prosecutor--do they think Clements will refuse? Why not just impeach him already--does there really have to be an investigation?

There's a good reason for giving Gonzalez time

When criminal charges get farther up the food chain once Gonzalez has been relieved of his position, you KNOW Republicans are going to cry "WITCH HUNT!"

So, by taking his time and going by the book, giving Gonzalez a respectable amount of time to revise his testimony, we on the left get three things:

1- A show of respect to the letter of the law.

2- Freak the hell out of Rove & Co., giving them more time to know that we're coming for them. I argue that this is a GOOD thing, because the more worried they get, the sloppier they're going to get - as Gonzalez's testimony proves. Let them scheme. Let them get their stories straight. They'll get screwed once specific details are requested and they can't provide them, as Gonzales is.

3- Most importantly: Dems DON'T look like they're conducting a witch-hunt; we look like we're enforcing the rules set forth in the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and other laws of the land.

We can't just attack the Republicans as they've attacked Dems; yes, more left-leaning politicians need to grow some balls and stand up for themselves and those they represent, but resorting to the "half-baked conspiracy theories" - which is EXACTLY how the Neocons would have it reported, as they've done in the past - that the right used for justification of the war wouldn't get us anywhere.

Leahy needs an air-tight case against those he's going after, and we need to be patient. A majority of those who have something coming to them will get it, and although I doubt everyone (Cheney, Bush) will get what they deserve, I'm fairly certain we're going to see the indictments of a lot of cabinet members and "advisors" like Rove.

Hopefully Bush/Cheney can be impeached before they have a chance to pardon the sins of their followers, which you know they'll get if the douchebags currently sitting in chairs they didn't earn have a chance to do so.
