Petraeus live blogging

1. Shouting demonstrator just removed; NPR doesn't report what they actually said.

2. Levin: No estimate of troops levels at year end? Petraeus: Yes.

3. You can hear Petraeus's voice warm up when McCain starts to question him.

4. Softball from McCain on Iran.

5. "Extremists." Watch for this term to be applied domestically.

6. Petraeus, Kennedy: Status of Forces agreement will not go to Congress, briefings only.

7. Lieberman [slurping sounds]. "I wish we could come to an agreement on the facts that you've shown us, the charts... The impressive political progress. The Iraqi political leadership has achieved a lot more progress than the American political leadership." If I were McCain, I'd still pick Condi, though. Lieberman can't play the piano.

8. Lieberman: Real men to go Teheran. Petraes: Rockets, mortars, explosively formed devices and training from Iran. [This from the greatest military power in the world, and we're worried about fucking mortars?]

9. Lieberman: Iranians responsible for hundreds of deaths [missed if it was US deaths] Petraeus: Yes.

10. Petraeus: Iraqis are actually asking to stay in our facilities, because they get training. And we have their biometrics, so we can track them. [How s useful these technnologies will be here at home!]

This hearing's hard to listen to because the bullshit is so thick. Honestly, a trillion dollar war, and we're worried about mortars. And all about oil, that we didn't even manage to seize. See Juan Cole for a bracing dose of realism.

And McCain still thinks Al Qaeda is Shiite. I suppose the press reaction will be "If a Democrat said this it'd be a major problem for them, but since everybody knows McCain is a foreign policy expert it doesn't matter that he doesn't know WTF he's talking about."

Petreaus is greasy and shifty--it's no wonder

the administration likes him so much...

This is just theater--Bush is running out the clock, and Congress wants to run on it yet again, but doesn't want to actually end it. It's a farce that's killing and robbing us.

very boring Obama speech--

he's getting Bidenish, and not asking qs.

& now MSNBC is trying to spin it up

to be something important.

NPR just quoted him...

... and not Hillary. If the question hadn't uttered in a baritone, it would have seemed as banal as it was. (He doesn't want a "precipitous" withdrawal.)

And then look at...

...the photos of Clinton and McCain.

NPR interview with Clinton

Clinton Rejects Petraeus' Call to Slow Troop Pullout.

She not only talks about Petraeus but also the election (including the double standard in campaign coverage and MI and FL).

NPR is teh suck

Last I checked Hillary was not only at the hearings, she asked questions, and she's actually running for President. But Nice Polite Republicans only play clips from America's favorite baritone -- orating, of course, not asking questions, which drives me nuts, though of course YMMV.

NPR covered Hillary just fine

Yesterday, and this morning.

You know PBS is on its last legs, and Republicans would do anything to get rid of NPR - these are imperfect institutions, but their creation was a kind of miracle - and the way that they work, as quasi independent corporations with government support was one of the genius creations of the sixties. We need to support them with genuine, specific criticism, but devaluing the work that they do that is absent from almost any other media forum simply doesn't make sense to me.

In fact, the intro to NPR's coverage, this morning, of the hearings yesterday started with a perfect summation of the needle that Petraeus was threading, to present the occupation/war in Iraq as sufficiently improved to be able to call the surge a success, but still sufficiently dangerous and fragile to be able to insist that we still have to stay, pretty much without any end in sight.

The hearings were fine

The subsequent news coverage was not.

I'm Not Talking About The News Coverage

I'm talking about how NPR covered it, and I wasn't aware of any favoritism toward Obama.

I'll Take That Pic of Clinton

She looks like all the bullshit is giving her a headache. It gives me one.

Obama does look like a rock star. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing for someone running for president. Personally, I prefer the overly serious woman who cannot believe the crap she's hearing. But then, you knew that already.

"Do what you feel in your heart to be right -- for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't. " - Eleanor Roosevelt

I meant the subsequent NPR news coverage

Last night and this morning, the various NPR news programs consistently quoted Obama only.

There may have been a longer story where both were quoted, but in the summary coverage, Obama only. Might as well have been organized by whoever kidnapped Josh Marshall.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
