We have two sad stories about the environment today.
1) Congress and by extension the WH administration, water down climate change legislation. Coal, Electric Industries Big Winners in Climate Bill Deal.
Details of the compromise are still emerging, but already the chief sponsors of the measure — Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) — have been forced [by whom?] to lower carbon-reduction targets, cut renewable fuel standards and dole out billions of dollars in benefits to the nation’s largest polluting industries...Additionally, although President Barack Obama had campaigned on a platform of selling 100 percent of so-called pollution permits to industry — a strategy he said would generate $646 billion to fight global warming over the next decade — the House compromise gives all but 15 percent of those permits away for free...
And these changes have arrived before the amendment process begins. House Republicans have vowed to dilute the environmental protections even further during debate...
2) I thought it was a Bush trademark to hire the fox to guard the henhouse. Now we discover that Obama was a student of Bush, again. Obama Nominates Superfund Polluter Lawyer To Run DOJ Environment Division From the comments thread there:
This is not the man we elected. I want my vote back...Who is this president and what has he done with our candidate who we loved, believed in and worked our asses off getting him elected?
The several weeks have been very disappointing. I'm feeling disillusioned and it's way too early in this administration for me to have so many doubts.
If I may make the assumption - those sound like former koolaid drinkers having regrets. Too late they are seeing that Brand Obama and Barack Obama are not the same.
