I thought I would leave you with some really great quotes from the Villagers who trekked out to Oklahoma for the wankfest on Unity
and the unbearable greatness of being Bipartisan
. [Look, I know this kind of unity and bipartisanship is extremely distinct from the teh unity and bipartisanship that Obama's advocating, because, well, Obama promised me a pony. Maybe I can heat the house by drying and burning the droppings. I love ponies.] May I have the handkerchief, please? The last cigarette? Thank you:
Bloomberg, moderates lament state of U.S.
"I think he's like the rest of us, hoping against hope that the two parties rise to the occasion," Sen. David Boren said.
Boren said a "time out" from the two-party system might be needed to get a system derailed by money, special interests and political extremism back on track.
A joint statement read by the meeting's co-host, former U.S. Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn, led off with the line: "America is in danger."
"We are failing to address them primarily because rampant [??] partisanship has paralyzed the ability of government to act and lead," Nunn said.
Right, right. As Digby points out, the first thing a Democratic administration should do is extend the right hand of good fellowship across the aisle by leaving Bush's tax cuts for the rich in place. After than, we should get serious about making sure the financial classes can keep their second and third homes by handing them a new commission stream from privatizing Social Security. Of course, that won't be enough, because nothing is ever enough. You know the drill.
And my personal favorites, from Bloomberg himself:
"We have to inject some Civility
and respect and have a really Serious
, considered debate," Boren said. "This country is in severe trouble -- how can we not see that?"
"Somehow or another we seem to have lost our vision," Bloomberg said. "We've become afraid and there's no reason for America to be afraid."
BANG!!
"Somehow or another...." That's, er, rich.
"We've become afraid..." Goodness, how?
And all this vacuity would be different from Obama's "unity" rhetoric how, exactly?
Because our the Village
eats the one up with a spoon, and the other up with a really, really big, shiny new spoon?
I'm gonna get a pony!

I can’t tell you how
I can't tell you how fucking enraged this Bloomberg/Boren Unity
The Country is in Trouble thang makes me. Where the hell were they after the Supreme Court crowned Bush43 with the mantle of office, did they call for unity and bipartisansip then? FuckNo!
Where were they after Sept. 11, our country was under attack, we citizens wanted unity and actually forced our politicians to it, and what did we get? Fucking IraqII !
Where the hell were they after the 2004 election when Bush got 51% of the vote under highly questionable circumstances and declared he had a mandate? Where the fuck where they when they decided we needed to get out of Iraq and Bush doubled down? Where the hell where they when the Dems re-took Congress in 2006? Oh yea, there they were calling for bi-partisanship.
Now that it looks like a Dem will win the WhiteHouse and Dms will strengthen their margins in congress, NOW they are calling for bi-partisanship??? NOW?? After 12 years of Republican control of Congress and almost 8 in the WH? NOW???
Now they say neither party is offering answers? Have they read the 1,000 dead trees it took to produce the Dems white papers and these non-partisans say no one has addressed the problems of our nation???
Isn't it odd that each and every Dem on that list is a confirmed conservative? Isn't it fucking odd that they convolute the abysmal showing of the Republican party and equate it with the mighty giants running for the Dem nomination?
I'm an OU alumn; I think David Boren has done a fine job as President of my beloved alma mater. I never thought he was a good Dem Senator and I don't think his son is a good Dem Congresscritter. But geeze, this is just beyond the pale.
The ego of these men involved in all of this is something I cannot comprehend. They don't have the courage to go through the primary for their party/ies. But they do think they're stink is bettah than anyone else's who have the wherewithall to ya know, actually compete.
And have they listened to Obama?? Seriously he's already toasted and buttahed the middle of the loaf.
Sorry to fillibuster this, but it really ticked me off. Just as the "Hillary was crying" meme did. NO she wasn't! Crying is what John Boehner does when talking about how many more American GIs he wants to kill. Or what that pathological sumbitch Bush does when he allows a tear to come whilst talking about the soldiers who have died for his ego.
I think we need a "time out," Dee!
That was the Boren comment that chilled me to the bone. "Time out" -- from the electoral system?
How, exactly? Cancel the elections? McCain/Lieberman? Continuity of government? Because you know there's a contingency plan somewhere...

Call me Pollyanna
But I do think this whole Boren/Bloomberg/Etc frothing is happening because they’ve sensed a shift in the cultural wind and it’s made them uneasy. What if the next election doesn’t bring more of the same but really results in change? That could be bad so they’ve gotten together to get their names in the paper and remind everyone that they’re actually very important people who should be listened to, and accommodated. I take their nervousness as a promising sign.
boren and bloomberg circus
its all over for that one ring circus.

while i appreciate your sarcasm, lb, the greater point is a good
one, for us. that is, the republican establishment is afraid. that's good. better, their "time out" from democracy idea isn't going to float (yet) in the public.
bloomy is dead in the water, farmer's right about that. further, you are correct to see how the 'unity' bullshit has been transferred to obama. that's interesting to me.
long long ago they started this unity meme, and while we've had great success mocking it on the blogosphere, the larger impact upon the general public has been sustained, and is spreading.
what is the real affect of "unity?" just as you say, forgetting republican crimes, excusing those who brought ruin to this nation, and suppressing the progressive action that is needed to correct it. and of course, continuing our habit of giving the rich every advantage while leaving them out of any discussion of who is responsible for all our problems.
still, like the establishment lost control of the republican party (in a fair race hucksterbee and paul would be leading); the establishment wing of the dem party isn't going to be able to control all these OFB
members, assuming they are real. look at them- newbies, angry, without strong adherence to ideology, dreamers. and young.
seems like our job is going to be educating the OFB
that they have more in common with progressives than the unity crowd. that should be easy, if their guy is elected and sells them out as fast as some of us think he will. alternatively, we could be more Civil and try to frame what we're saying about him in more emotionally positive terms.
Transmission vectors
It's like the unity meme leaped the interspecies barrier, or something. Hillary hatred is the same thing.
I don't know if it's so much teaching them, which might be presumptuous, as of giving them weapons they can use when the shit hits the fan. And maybe we need to learn from them. They were on the ground, after all.
My impression of the blogosphere demographic is that it begins with, er, people about Atrios's age, that is, a cohort older than the OFB
. Yes?

new fear meme
I am now seeing tons of these stories about protection details for Barry O and threats on his life. It really scares me that it appears the media is trying to makes this major headlines. In the vein of giving someone ideas. I fear some of the GOP would use their connections and we would have postponed elections (see also: Pac-man-istan). By the way, the media would love it, the biggest domestic news event in 20 yrs. It worries me greatly...
Oh, that's a bad one
Cause a continuity of government issue/unity government by shooting the black Democratic winner, after which riots predictably ensue*, the newly Federalized national guard is called out--all in the name of "healing" of course.
That makes so much sense.
That's a very, very bad picture, Intranets.
That chimes with something I was thinking about after I made this post: I now read Boren's "time out" statement more as a threat than anything else.
Do we know more about this conference?
NOTE * One reason Bloomberg, as a mayor, would be there, regardless of the Presidential hype, would be any civil unrest angle.

On that..
maybe that is why NOLa was not chosen to host DNC/RNC as was initally suggested... (I'm sayin')
democrats
Suspicious me. Seems like some of our Democratic leaders are the ones who are pushing the non-partisan unity thingy. Isn't this just more fear mongering, trying to get us to go along? Did the Democratic leadership play host to this effort? If so, Democratic leadership, I have some uncivil words for you. And more! Get off your asses and begin impeachment of bush/cheney, now, before we are in another war. If you think we're partisan and ununified now, wait to see what another war will bring. MOVE!
