People are really pissed about Skippy’s rhetorically charged post on VT and Kos and misogyny and violence against women. notice that I read the post as about all four of those things, and not just the first two. But there is one angle I’ll add: it’s a good thing that even when we strenuously disagree about framing, and the relationships between threats and murder and discourse, we are still talking about the basic problem: violence against women. This is the power of the blogosphere, and of blogging as a form of writing. Skippy could’ve put up a post with lots and lots of statistical details about the endemic of violence against women, and about four people would’ve read the whole thing. Instead, in one lightning strike, he’s continued an important discussion, made more important by Monday’s tragic events, and kept it on the front burner.
Kos is a big boy, he can take the critiques made of him, and his friends will come to his support. Discussion will happen, and hopefully, a few people will have their eyes opened to the relevant facts relating to violence against women. Kudos to Skippy for going against the grain, and kudos to the rest of the blogosphere, even his detractors, for keeping the conversation going. This is that rare time when a “blog war” actually serves a good cause. Republicans have made ’feminism’ a dirty word, and it’s long past time to take it back.

I find attacks like skippy’s more irrational than rational, more destructive than constructive, and more mythical than actual. I’ve seen too many attacks against the mythical Kos, and what Kos seems to represent to these people than actual rational engagements to the things that Kos says.
I agree that Kos is being boneheaded on the Kathy Sierra case. But, guess what, I agree with Kos about the innaneness of a ’blogger code of ethics’.
The best take on the Kos-Sierra controversy that I’ve read was by Joan Walsh, and it is my hope that we can all learn to grow up.
I'll say it again in the form of a chart
Making the possibly false assumption that differential death rates are caused by “violence,” where does the real problem lie?

lb, the question isn't about if men are suffering too
because you’re right, they are. but in different ways, and from different causes.
to me it’s apples and oranges, and while i’m happy to discuss what oppresses men, i believe that it’s an important conversation to talk about violence against women too.
technically, we’re still soaking the patriarchy. when that changes, let me know. ahem, i just lost my right to control my uterus, so you know…i’m a little touchy on the whole “but what about men” thing.
The questions that are asked are important, tooo
I don’t disagree that this “conversation” is important, but I’m sure you will be the firt to understand that I might be touchy on the unasked question as well.
Incidentally, I didn’t say men were suffering, and that’s not what the chart says. The chart said that they’re dying/. If this were another conversation, I’d be talking about trivializing. Eh?
Not sure of the metaphor of “soaking the patriarchy.” What do you mean? “You’re soaking in it?”

When 'folks' start comparing Kos to the...
…Blacksburg shooter I take leave of them. I have erased Booman Tribune’s bookmark and will not be visiting there anytime soon.
Kos’s post was wrong in tone and content.
So what?
He’s just one guy a point he has repeatedly made, along with the fact that LORDY he does make mistakes, the bloviation about this issue had much more to do with envy and jealousy than the facts as I’ve read them, the words he wrote.
There are many, many instances of this sort of abuse, and worse, happening throughout our society. By my estimate over 1/3 of the women I’ve had relationships with were raped by a ’friend’ or abused by a family member. Let’s talk about that instead of one post of less than 50 words by a guy who is not the leading light on this subject.
Why aren’t the BooPeople attacking Rush or Donohue or Malkin on daily basis? Too much work perhaps? SadlyNo seems to be up to the task. And, spare me the comparisions between Kossack and Malkin’s Monkeys; one group is opinionated the other murderous.
Let’s stop focusing on Kos and get into some real analysis of the problem.
philip, i wouldn't erase boo, skippy was just a member post
and we’ve all put up a stupid post or two, yours truly most definately included. boo is a great writer, and i think the best way to answer stupid posts is by…answering them. in the comments, with a post of your own at your own blog, etc. this is the blogosphere, where going too far is a sign you’ve arrived. and it’s self policing: if you think skippy’s gone too far he won’t know if you don’t tell him.
lambert, i don’t want to argue for what i can’t back up, but iirc i have read that male animals die earlier for a number of reasons, some of which may be genetic. and not all men who die before women are suffering before death, some just go because ’they’re number is up.’ i wonder about the differences in mortality that we can address, and certainly if you look at the black men on that chart of yours, there’s room for improvement that has nothing to do with genetics. one idea i have: men could cause less stress in their lives, and thus reduce their risk for heart disease (the #1 killer of white men, iirc), by not abusing the women around them. being abusive causes stress to the abuser as well as the abused. how’s that for tying it all together? kumbaya.
as for the patriarchy…hmmm. let’s see, compared to men: women make less then men for the same work, there are fewer women in positions of power in government, fewer women who craft policy that affects women, women are less frequently in the executive and managerial class, women are less frequently leaders of religious organizations, women’s issues are underfunded by the government, big pharma spends more money on reseraching penis-enhancing drugs than those for uterine cancers, pornographic images of women being brutalized are popular, legal and pervasive…oh, and i lost the right to control my uterus today.
so yeah, i think we’re soaking in it.
C'mon, CD
CD, I had no idea what “soaking the patriarchy” meant, so I asked.
One idea that it’s OK to say:
Well…. Better to remain silent, I think. The poster who said that was the best policy was right. I think I’ll go die five years earlier now, thank you very much.

Whoops....
pasted my non-screen name there…ah, well, nobody cares what I think. Except me that is.
I’ll take your advice under consideration CD re: Skippy’s post at BooLand.
I feel these issues of man vs. woman and the inverse are really quite important. Over half the folks I hang with are of the feminine gender. I’m concerned about them and for them. But I’m not ready to cut my throat soley because I said something dumb or insensitive nor should people be so eager to knock others when they do so. It’s taken millions of years to program our minds the way they are. To change them will not be easy.
Productive discussion of gender issues is no simple dialogue to participate in and Skippy don’t do himself proud with his take on Kos’s comments.
Me?
I’m excited about Kucinich goin’ after The Vile Cheney. If you will recall many ’beltway nabobs’ were convinced that to oppose The MeatGrinder was political suicide for Dems.
Until a man by the name of Ned Lamont came along, stood up and said in front of PumpkinHead, Tweety, O’Lielly and all the rest that the war was wrong and we ought to end it.
I hope Kucinich’s stand will get more folks ready to Impeach these vile scum who’ve done our nation and us so much harm.
I’m gonna write a post or two about what I think about the current state of gender affairs in my ’hood. Then ever body can dogpile on me.
Thanks for the feedback and I look forward to discussing this and other pressing issues of the day with you at YK2007!

Jealous of Idiocy?
“the bloviation about this issue had much more to do with envy and jealousy than the facts as I’ve read them, the words he wrote.”
Yes, I admit it. I am jealous. What a loser I am to care about a woman getting death threats! One day maybe I, too, can be HARD and just not give a shit! Smell that stink? That’s me, burning up with jealousy. And giving a shit.
and “Let’s stop focusing on Kos and get into some real analysis of the problem” is, in this particular instance, like saying “Let’s stop focusing on the TV and watch the show.” That is, we are focusing on the problem by discussing the attitude that Kos was kind enough to embody for us. Because men taking death threats to women casually is a huge problem. And of course it’s not related at all, but the fact that the VA Tech school didn’t take what they thought was a “domestic shooting” seriously only caused scores of more dead people. I agree, how could anyone think that’s related to Kos telling KS, in response to threats that drove her to a psychiatrist, “But so what? It’s not as if those cowards will actually act on their threats”? Right?
But I’m with you. Let’s talk about something else. Let’s talk about this quote:
“There are many, many instances of this sort of abuse, and worse, happening throughout our society. By my estimate over 1/3 of the women I’ve had relationships with were raped by a ‘friend’ or abused by a family member. Let’s talk about that instead of one post of less than 50 words by a guy who is not the leading light on this subject.”
Isn’t framing a fun activity? By my estimate, the amount of words uttered by someone does not equal much at all, because you can drop down only one word in the right barrio, bro, and it will end you up in a very, very, very bad way. You can drop only two palabras, and find yourself married. Speaking three more will be required in that same marriage, over and over (and withholding them will cause you much pain), and four words insure a judge that you are about to tell The Whole Truth. So I appreciate the verbal finessing down of the importance of a glass of cyanide by focusing on the shape of the glass, nice. But ludicrous. I mean…you know that, right?
Nobody cared about anorexia nervosa until Karen Carpenter died. Why? She was a symbol for a problem. A problem that was widespread but needed a focal point. Kos’ TWO dismissive and juvenile letters which boiled down to “Screw her, get over it, just don’t tell me I have to be responsible for the language of the commenters on my site” in response to a woman getting RAPE AND DEATH THREATS is a perfect symbol.
Can’t you get that? Because if you cannot, I say you simply refuse to. It’s not like it’s rocket science.

Feel better now?
So those who embargo the conversation are to win? Have I got that right? If I find myself in your ’hood I’d be in big, big trouble because of what I said?
You know what homes? You’re right. I know you are because folks have threatened me because they didn’t like what I said and they scared the hell out of me because they were serious. So no disagreement there. Rape, murder, threats all are bad things to have happen to you.
But guess what I told those ’folks’ who threatened me homes? I tole ’em to get fucked. Because sometimes that’s the only thing ’folks’ like that understand. And to do other is to let them win. Something I’m not gonna let them do.
And guess what?
I’m still here. Still talkin’ still postin’ and if you don’t agree with me that’s jes fine.
But don’t expect to get your point across with the rhetoric you are using now.
’Cause you will not.
