Pre-emptively dissing the Spanish on torture extradition requests

[UPDATE As it turns out, Ari Gibbs dissed Helen Thomas on torture, too, at the same presser. That'll show 'em. -- lambert]

David Corn points out that there's funny ha ha, and then there's just funny:

I was asked to go on Hardball on Tuesday night to discuss the news that Spanish prosecutors are likely to recommend a full investigation be conducted to determine if six former Bush administration officials—including ex-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales—ought to be indicted for having sanctioned torture at Guantanamo. So I thought I'd ask White House press secretary Robert Gibbs about the matter. ...

At the Tuesday afternoon White House daily briefing, I asked Gibbs if the administration would cooperate with any requests from the Spaniards for information and documents. He had a predictable response: "I don't want to get involved in hypotheticals." He quickly pivoted to point out that Obama has moved to prohibit torture at Gitmo and elsewhere.

I posed a follow-up: Have you spoken to the Spanish government about this case? He seized on my use of the word "you" and, with a broad smile, said, "I have not spoken with the Spanish." Reporters in the room laughed. I obviously did not mean him personally; the "you" had referred to the Obama administration. Nor did I mean, I added, Bill Burton, the deputy press secretary, or any of the other press aides in the room. The point was whether the administration had been in contact with the Spanish government about the Bush Six investigation. "The Justice Department?" I asked. Gibbs, though, essentially brushed off the question: "I would send you to Justice. Like I said, I've not spoken" to the Spanish government.

[M]oments later, when a reporter asked Gibbs if Obama had any reaction to the conservative groups organizing "tea parties" of protest on tax day, he replied, "I've never monitored them nor spoken with the Spanish about them." People in the room laughed.

And when the questioning in the room turned to the all-important subject of the Obama's new Portuguese water dog, Gibbs continued the joke. Noting that the dog might be spotted on the White House lawn later in the day or that it might not, he added that "the dog has also not talked to the Spanish about impending torture cases." More laughter.

Point taken. Obama's not talking to the fucking Spanish.

If an investigation [in the independent Spanish judicial system] proceeds, Obama could well have to decide whether or not to comply with Spanish requests for US government documents--that is, to help or hinder the investigation. Later in the process, Obama could even conceivably have to contend with extradition requests. If any of this comes to pass, it won't then be a laughing matter.

Well, we've just sent the fucking Spanish a message that won't fucking happen.

Why doesn't Obama want to hold anyone accountable for torture? Is it only political calculation?

Because he's afraid of the truth

He's not the only one. Job One in DC is covering the asses of the people who work for the government regardless of party or position. (Clinton's impeachment was nothing more than the exception that proves the rule)

Obama knows - and he's right about this - that disclosure of the facts would pretty much put paid to any confidence in government among the citizenry. Much better we remain safely ignorant of the extent to which our "leaders" are a pack of corrupt, murderous bastards.

Just great

Laugh, clown, laugh...as my mother used to say derisively when someone was making jokes about a serious matter.

I really don't get what is so funny about this. I'm looking forward to the Spanish Inquisition.

I guess we’re just not in on the joke, huh?

I’ve never felt in on what passes for joking by Obama – I had that disconnect going back to the primary season – and I guess he has surrounded himself with people who share that sense of "humor."

I keep wondering if they would all find it so amusing if it were Americans who had been held by a foreign government and tortured; what do you think their reaction would be to the kind of yuk-fest held by Gibbs?

Wankers all.

Obama Admin. "jokes" always seem to

surface when there are actual people who are being hurt in a situation. That pervasive cruelty is one of the most disappointing hallmarks of this administration (and eerily reminiscent of W's penchant for belittling nicknames).

Good observation, Oceansandmountains.

I knew there was something about this administration's 'humor' that always sat wrong with me, but could never put my finger on it.

Whether it's joking about a marijuana question at a serious event or this, they seem to use their humor best to demoralize and disempower people, particularly people on their fucking side, and I don't like that one bit. It's not quite like the Dubya frat-boy towel snapping; it's far worse, in a way.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
