President of LA NOW Chapter endorses Palin

Valhalla's picture

Shelly Mandell, pres. of the L.A. Now chapter, introduces Palin at a rally in SoCal:

In rarity for a Republican event, Mandell bragged about her efforts campaigning for the failed Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and her support for Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1984.

"I know Sarah Palin cares about women's rights," Mandell said. "As vice president, she will fight for you. She cares about our children and she cares about women's lives."

Local news station has the rest.

The New Agenda, an offshoot of PUMA-JSND whose goal is to promote women's rights as nonpartisans, has a bit more on the story.

Any other election in my life, I'd be appalled, but I just can't work up any disgust over this one.

The New Agenda is ambivalent on whether Palin qualifies as a feminist, but notes that whatever a feminist is, Kim Gandy has definitely lost track of it.

Update: Following this story around the net, came across the LA NOW Chapter's statement that Mandell's endorsement is a personal one, not a chapter one; LA endorses Obama-Biden as "a proven team for women".

"Sarah Palin is an extraordinary example of

womanhood?"

Uh, not.

She's an extraordinary example of hubris.

And let's not mention her totally inappropriate serial winking, which I won't mention.

Gandhi to reporter: I think it would be a good idea.

What's this winking meme, now?

I watched the debate, and didn't see any.

Is this something the boiz saw when it was happening, or something they only "realized" they saw afterwards?

May I ask, what is the current definition of feminist?

I seemed to be confused about that as well as I was confused about the principles of the Democratic party. I was under the impression that feminism included equal opportunity and rights for women, and the ability to achieve and make your own choices. Correct me if I am wrong.
How has Palin violated these tenants? For all my differences of positions with her, she is entitle to her opinions and pursuits. Has she denied equal rights to different sexes, denied women the right to vote or be educated?

Aeryl's picture

She is all about denying that

Women deserve bodily autonomy, which is pretty anti-feminist in my book. Yes, a lot of other things she has espoused, are feminist ideals, but that doesn't make her feminist, and since she supports denying women the right to make their own decisions about their body, I have to say she is not a feminist, she only plays one on TV.

From a reforming winker, it's there. It's and I swore I heard

a tongue click, if not two. I think she's channeling grandpa from The Real McCoy's, I expect her to call Pepito in from the barn.

Agreed Tartu.

It makes it very difficult to focus on her strengths with these idiosyncratic mannerisms. But I will try. I will try to better than this.

As a progressive at heart

Palin does not have strengths for me. She is a REPUBLICAN, for crying out loud. But been a female does not make her more evil than other republicans.

Question

Q: Is making a choice to deny other people the right to make their own choice an acceptable choice for all? Honestly, I want to hear some ideas.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

tartu's picture

Valid question to be sure

But is there a great onus on Palin to answer this question than on Bush, Cheney, Huckabee, Harry Reid, Bob Casey, Arlen Specter, Bill Frist, etc?

Damon's picture

Tartu

Was that in response to my question? If so, I don't think any of those folks ever ran as a feminist, nor turned into a feminist idol by their followers.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

In all honesty, I was not aware that Palin

was running on the feminist platform. I just object to extra demands placed on Palin than on other anti-choice politicians just because she is a woman. There is plenty to criticize without focusing on her sex.

I will also ask again: what is a current definition of a feminist and how has Palin demonstrated that she does not believe in gender equality?

Here is an interesting post on feminists been torn about defending Palin: http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/20...

Also, here is a cute video for relief of a tense discussion: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/pets/detail?&entry_id=31125&type=pets

blech. what a horrible thread.

palin isn't a 'feminist.' i can walk and chew gum at the same time; obama isn't making me excited about the coming 'democratic' admin but i'm not interested in defending palin. no sir, no way. yuck.

i don't have to talk about her cunt or tits to come up with a long list of reasons why she sucks, and why i don't want her to be in charge of the bomb. let's start with the stupid. it buuuurns. she's so annoyingly lite and shallow it's painful to contemplate, as well as what her elevation means for american politics in general.

i skimmed this post thinking it was another reminder of how "our" organizations in the Village are as out of touch as the Village itself. but i see we've still got some diehards here, who aren't willing to act like real feminists and treat palin soley on the basis of what she is. college dropout, weathergirl, beauty queen, hypocrite, adulterer, tax cheat, book burner, lousy mom (you don't put infants on the stage. period), suck up, separatist, animal hater, fake populist, oil company stooge, anti-environmentalist, bible thumper, witch hater, science denier and fundie republican.

yeah. go on and get behind all that. because you're a "feminist" and you think she's being treated unfairly. whatever.

tartu's picture

Let me see

If we keep "hypocrite, tax cheat, book burner, suck up, separatist, animal hater, fake populist, oil company stooge, anti-environmentalist, bible thumper, witch hater, science denier and fundie republican" and throw the rest away, we might have a good argument. That with leave us with an Evil Republican regardless of sex.

Attacking Palin as a woman

Hurts all women.

Why is this so hard for feminists to get behind? I don't like the woman myself, and have no intention whatsoever of voting for her, but that doesn't mean I stand by while she is attacked for the crime of being Female In Public.

My favorite anti-Palin argument yet

Lauri Owen wrote into the NAAFA LA yahoo group: As your token Alaskan, I am writing to let you all know that Sara Palin, John McCain's pick for VP, is not a fat friendly soul. She has been known to say some very derogatory things about fat people, including when she recently insulted an Alaskan Representative by referring to her in public, with a sneer, as a "fat-ass." If I were a Republican, her overt fatism would motivate *me* to vote Demo this time. A vote for McCain/Palin is most definitely not a vote for increasing fat acceptance. p.s.: This attitude is particularly outrageous considering the extraordinarily high percentage of fat Alaskans. Trust me on this: We are not amused. ______ As I wrote my reply, a thought came into my head, and I carried it onto the page.... ----- I wouldn't want to stereotype all mainstream beauty pageant participators, but fat-positive thinking is not generally the indoctrination for that crowd.

Yeah, she's not in favor of abortion

That is Palin's personal belief and she certainly has walked her talk. But I have yet to see anywhere that she has worked in any way to deny that right to another. Or that she intends to.

Choice is supposed to be just that. If she chooses not to avail herself of that option, that is no less valid a choice. It's all about women having control over their own bodies, is it not?

Now apart from her eschewing abortion for herself and thinking it's not right for others, her Republicanism, (and the fact that she brought her infant children on stage and skinned them alive while fucking three men and burning her tax books while wearing a bathing suit and being obviously inferior to outraged female posters here) why can't another woman find her admirable without that being appalling?

That is where we started this, isn't it?

And BTW - being a Democrat doesn't make you automatically superior these days, either. So we better find something other than party affiliation for dismissal of other humans as inferior. How about...religion?

Damon's picture

Sometimes...

words aren't "just words." If even words don't always mean everything, they always mean something. Is the argument that we're supposed to deny our lying eyes and ears? Really, what horrible thing would she have to do to end the apologism?

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

tartu's picture

I am sorry, but I don't understand you point here

I really don't. I am not defending Palin's positions, I am just objecting to applying harsher standards to her than to men with the same exact positions.

Damon's picture

But...

This thread is about a Palin endorsement. Everything else is a red herring, no? I never accepted the OFB's "well, Hillary did it, too" in an argument about Obama, and I'm not going to accept as a valid answer distractions from the subject matter, here. I think the question is what your point is, really, by bringing up other politicians in a thread about a Palin endorsement.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
