Nice people are respectful of religion.
Occasionally, a journalist just doesn’t play nice enough:
KABUL, Afghanistan - Conservativeclerics and elders demanded Thursday that the Afghan government not interfere with a controversial death sentence handed down to a young journalist convicted of insulting Islam for distributing a report questioning polygamy.
…clerics and elders worried that Kaambakhsh would be let off the hook like Abdul Rahman, a Christian convert imprisoned in 2006 on charges of apostasy who was whisked off to Italy, where he had been granted asylum.

as'ad did something on this a while back
as did i in this previous post here. i’ll reprint what i said then:
of all the “good” wars america has ever fought, the “war” on afghanistan should’ve been one. we should’ve gone in, taken over, routed all talib leaders in any way associated with 9/11, and installed and supported with constructive security and real investment, a democratic gov’t. we didn’t, and so once again i’m left with the analysis, “there is no such thing as a war that accomplishes its goals.” unless the stated goal is “enrich military contractors and drug dealers,” but that’s rarely the public cry.
everything bush touches turns to shit. trillions later, thousands of american casualties later, lots and lots of dead women and children later, $3.45/gal later…wake up people, the war on terror is a lie.
i salute the brave journalists and thinkers willing to die in order to distribute books that suggest women and men should be equal.
…and remind me of this story the next time i’m on one of my patented “bloggers rule!!1!” posts. we’ve got a long way to go before we can stand as equals next to these brave people.
