Rep. Mary Flowers wants to save you $17 billion

Hearing on single-payer health insurance bill draws about 30

About 30 people attended a hearing Thursday on House Bill 311, which is now awaiting action in the Illinois General Assembly. The hearing was held at the Nelson Hagnauer Granite City Township Hall.

The hearing was sponsored by the Illinois Single Payer Coalition and Healthcare for All Illinois, and included an overview of the bill; comments by State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), one of the sponsors of the bill; and questions from the audience.

The bill would create single-payer, state-operated health insurance in the state, eliminating the need for businesses to provide health insurance for employees.

Supporters cite what they say would be a $17 billion savings in administrative costs, as well as complete comprehensive coverage for all Illinois residents.

Careful, DC

Keep putting up these positive reports on state-by-state single-payer UHC and you'll get called willfuly stupid for supporting an incremetalist approach.

Seriously, good news that so many states are at least taking a serious look and the problems in MA will be very helpful in pointing out that an insurer-driven approach will not work in the end.

Something happening here, you might be interested. Thanks for all you do to keep this topic current.

Tiresome...

So tiresome... Interesting link on Kennedy though. Here's a link to a non-Moonie paper version of the same story (also covered in the Weekly Standard). Interestingly, Max Baucus is on the case; why I never posted on it. One could, of course, speculate that Kennedy cut a deal with Obama on health care in exchange for his support; one can, in that case, only wish that Obama had sought a mandate for it by actually running on it.

UPDATE Here's the USA Today coverage, with information on what Kennedy is actually advocating:

"Our goal is to enable proponents of reform to unite behind a single bill that can pass the Congress, be signed by the president and bring quality, affordable health care to the American people," Kennedy spokesman Anthony Coley says in an e-mail message.

Sure, I can live with an exincremental approach on this -- another thirty years or so should do it. And to think that all Kennedy has to do is say one word "HR676." We can only pray that he doesn't get rolled again, as on NCLB. Sorry to harsh the mellow...

fall back

the important thing is that we make sure that Kennedy does not put forward any bill the prevents states from acting on their own. Kennedy's role will be central as passing something before the end of his life will be more important than doing the right thing. And Kennedy has shown that he can be rolled. However, Kennedy is so sick he may be forced to resign. So it is important to pay attention to the whole committee

Smart!

The Bush administration did that all the time -- Federalize to lower standards. That's not a bad committee:

Edward Kennedy (MA)
Christopher Dodd (CT)
Tom Harkin (IA)
Barbara A. Mikulski (MD)
Jeff Bingaman (NM)
Patty Murray (WA)
Jack Reed (RI)
Hillary Rodham Clinton(NY)
Barack Obama (IL)
Bernard Sanders (I) (VT)
Sherrod Brown (OH)

And that makes me understand why that asshole, Max Baucus, wants to get involved. I wonder who will replace Obama? That might be an early indicator.

Baucus is chair of finance

I posted about Baucus before, as chair of finance he has a lot of clout. The finance committee is dominated by Senators from states w/ strong single payer movements, so I am hopeful we can find our way around Baucus. The fact that he came right out and said that he hasn't even looked at Obama's plan is an indicator of the level of arrogance that we are dealing with.

and finance has jurisdiction over medicare

and other public spending on health

Right away, I thought of ...

... was it Sam Nunn who stabbed Bill Clinton right in the chest on Don't Ask, Don't Tell? That's who I thought of when I read that by Baucus.

phhbbbttt!

dcb is most definitely not an incrementalist, sweetie.

incrementally compiling a list of all the candidates, governments, and organizations that are advocating for radical change in the present system is not the same thing as advocating for incremental changes in the present system.

Yes, that was Sam Nunn

aided and abetted by that noble statesman Colin Powell. They both rammed their shivs deep in Clinton's chest and back.
