Rep. Weiner on CBS Evening News--but not for his plan! WNYC does cover his plan

CBS Evening News opened with a moving segment on the free health care day in Los Angeles, then moved on to cover the town hall meetings.

Rep. Anthony Weiner's meeting last was night was covered, but not for his outstanding solution --Medicare for All with a robust private option-- but because initially his staffers wouldn't let local TV cameras into the meeting. Weiner later let CBD local News 2 in, but told them it wasn't about Ch. 2 but "for his constituents."

This sign is from another meeting, but says what needs to be said:

I checked the CBS Evening News site for video, but can't find any on this. But this CBS blog is a good rundown of various health care meetings. (Double correction: No video iin local CBS article about Weiner's meeting. There is a poll; not very good, but you can just vote no.)

About two thirds of the article, from local CBS News, is devoted to getting the TV cameras in and then some hostile attendees. That very end has some information about the actual plan:

But soon tempers cooled and the discussion about health care was on.

"This is not going to be free. That ain't going to happen," Weiner said.

Weiner said he backed a single-payer system and that the money to pay for it could come from the profits of health insurance companies and overhead.

"People are being forced to buy insurance. What if I don't want to buy insurance?" one person asked.

To which Weiner replied, "By no means am I defending the status quo."

On WNYC (NYC public radio station), they actually say the words "single payer" and --oh, be still my heart!-- "Medicare for All" in reporting on what Weiner said at his meeting!!! One man on Medicare talked enthusiastically about just "extending Medicare for everybody," saying it was a good idea. One woman says there would be higher taxes to give health care to everyone. (Well, d'uh.)

Now, the most interesting clip to me was about how Weiner responded to criticism from a meeting attendee that he would cover illegal immigrants. Weiner said it would save money to have them covered than to have to treat them at emergency rooms. Good for you, sir.

Thank you, Rep. Weiner.....thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Brave Representative Weiner! A Dem who gives a damn about what real people really need and does something about it.

Emails of Praise and Thanks time -- his staffers are overwhelmed with calls, but I bet the servers can handle some thank-you emails.

You go, guy!

"Illegal" immigrants

Let me just deal with that first.

People are not "illegal". Possibly their immigration status is.

These people, probably, handle your food and your linens and so on and so on and scooby-dooby--doo. In the (probably) coming flu epidemic, do you really want them to be without health care?

I give thanks I live in the "Socialist State of NYC". (The DADT policy goes back to at least Koch; it's a durable part of our city's governance, as the article demonstrates.)

Now that I've gotten that out of the way:

TONY RULZ!

If he weren't already engaged I'd marry him.

NOTE added in edit (although my love for Anthony Weiner is so complete, how can I add a note?):
Everyone should read the linked article from Effect Measure at Science Blogs. They make a convincing case that we are at risk for a really big Fall flu season, and we need to start thinking about that now.

We can't afford not to have single-payer!

On the page you linked to I found a link for the whole news broadcast (I think, didn't watch it all).
