Room 101

(Here are all the torture memos (that we know of)). Yech:

... (9) insects placed in a confinement box. ... You would like to place Zubadiyah in a cramped confinement box with an insect. You have informed us that he appears to have a fear of insects. In particular, you would like to tell Zubadiyah that you intend to place a stinging insect into the box with him. You would, however, place a harmless insect in the box [of course, of course. Like a cockroach, say.] You have orally informed us that you would in fact place a harmless insect such as a caterpiller into the box with him. [REDACTION]

Shameful. So shameful.

was there a deal

did Colin Powell endorse Obama in exchange for a promise of no prosecutions?

your tinfoil is showing

Seriously - where do you get this idea?

I am no fan of Colin "Put my principles in blind trust" Powell, but this is pretty out there. And what would be the cost of Obama's going back on this kind of promise, anyway? Colin Powell will say "Hey, no fair!"???

Prosecute, Please

And if they want to save the CIA agents and soldiers - fine. Prosecute Bush, prosecute the lawyers, prosecute Rummy, prosecute Cheney and everyone in those meetings.

If we don't prosecute, the America I believe in is dead.

According to Greenwald, that could happen

Greenwald:

One can certainly criticize Obama for vowing that no CIA officials will be prosecuted if they followed DOJ memos (though that vow, notably, does not extend to Bush officials), but -- assuming the reports about redactions are correct -- there is no grounds for criticizing Obama here and substantial grounds for praising him.

The more one reads of this, the harder it is to credit Obama's statement today that "this is a time for reflection, not retribution." At least when it comes to the orders of our highest government leaders and the DOJ lawyers who authorized them, these are pure war crimes, justified in the most disgustingly clinical language and with clear intent of wrongdoing. FDL has a petition urging Eric Holder to immediately appoint a Special Prosecutor to determine if criminal proceedings should commence.

I just signed it.

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." -- Mahatma Gandhi

signed it & sent a note

I would urge spreading the word about this petition as fast and far as we can.
