Jerusalem (AHN) - The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday voted in favor of launching a unilateral initial embargo on Iran over the Islamic Republic's failure to comply with international demands regarding its nuclear program.
The Iran Freedom Support Act sanctions any entity that provides any form of assistance to Iran's chemical, biological or nuclear weapons programs. The bill's sponsors expect the Senate to quickly endorse the measure and send it on to President George W. Bush for his final approval.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen told the AP following the vote, "Enough with the carrots. It's time for the stick."The Beast craves blood, it will never be sated.
However, critics within the House called into question taking such action at a time when the U.S. is pursuing a multi-national diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear crisis.
Said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, "It is, if you will, a cruise missile aimed at a difficult diplomatic effort just as they are reaching their most sensitive point."
Washington has agreed to wait several weeks before petitioning the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions in order to give talks between Iranian and European negotiators time to bear fruit.
But State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told Reuters on Thursday that despite several meetings between Iran's Ali Larijani and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana over the past week, Tehran continues to refuse to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
They believe their own bullshit. They ignore the reality on the ground in Iraq. They think what they're told by the loonies in the Air Force is true. They're too stupid to understand complexities in the geopolitical arena. They know one thing that is true:
The Democrats won't stop them, nor hardly complain.
UPDATE: Meanwhile, Iran makes ready. War Games, inflammatory rhetoric, and the distribution of war materials to strategic locations around the borders. I guess someone sees the stick.
