Schrödinger's Cat Endorses Obama

Really!?!

Maybe, maybe not.

The cat is one of Obama's senior policy advisors, though.

I asked Heisenberg

He said, "I'm uncertain."

[Edited to remove the influence of the people yelling in my ear. This series is rather popular in the office!]

Ann Arbor News

The paper twice endorsed Bush. The fact that they couldn't bring themselves to endorse McCain I read as an endorsement of Obama, or at least of Democrats over Republicans. It's certainly a repudiation of the latter.

did he win MI?

i don't know the paper--this jumped out at me from poynter -- and i'm so over all the endorsements either way.

the A2 newz endorsed bush twice???

wow, i've been gone a looooong time, it seems. that surprises me, a lot.

Did Who Win Michigan? Bush?!

Hell no! Republicans haven't won Michigan since the 80's. Reagan and Bush swung the Reagan Democrats their way, that decade.

BTW, my local (Lansing State Journal), endorsed Obama, yesterday. No, not a surprise.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

ahh--is Ann Arbor a GOP area?

(i know almost nothing about MI--can you tell?)

Yes, I can.

;)

Is Ann Arbor a GOP area? No way, Amber. Ann Arbor, of course, being a huge college town is probably the most liberal area in the entire state. Have you heard of the University of Michigan, which has an enrollment routinely hovering around the 40,000-student mark?

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

ah--thanks--

The only midwestern college town i know of--and that just barely--is Madison WI. (and aren't most college towns--and local newspapers--liberal in town as well as on campus? like Madison, or Austin TX?)

(I know most if not all of MI is not doing well at all economically--like OH and the rest of the Rust Belt)

Ann Arbor for Amberglow

Ann Arbor is doing quite well, all things considered. It is very much a Madison-type town.

I don't know why the Ann Arbor News is conservative, but what I do know is that its ownership is not local (Booth Newspapers), it's in conservative Grand Rapids on the westside of the state. I'm not sure if Booth is conservative, but if I had to guess I'd guess yes.

Remember, too, that university towns have campus newspapers and city newspapers most of the time. The Ann Arbor News is the city newspaper. The Michigan Daily is the campus newspaper.

So, when you think of Ann Arbor, just think of any big "college town" that you know of. In fact, think of the the higher-tier ones, as the University of Michigan is often considered an Ivy League-type public university. In fact, the majority of its funding doesn't come from the state, anymore, and if I remember correctly, a majority of the students are out-of-staters or international students.

I thought Ann Arbor had quite a reputation outside of the state.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

maybe it does--

we're all very self-absorbed here in NYC (and kinda not that interested--esp our media isn't--at all)--we hear a little (always bad) about Detroit sometimes, and nothing about the rest of the state usually. (there are whole giant areas of the country we don't ever hear about unless there's some disaster or serial killer or election or scandal (that Kwame guy) or auto industry news or whatever.

Americans in every other state know far more about us and our local/state news than we know about theirs, i'd say.

John Nash's cat, OTOH, hasn't decided yet (in this universe)

Nash, subject of "A Beautiful Mind," used Schroedinger's paradox and some very elegant math to create the parallel universes theory.

Which, actually, I kind of dig because maybe the cat never has to die.

Erm...

Nash, subject of “A Beautiful Mind,” used Schroedinger’s paradox and some very elegant math to create the parallel universes theory.

That would be Hugh Everett, I think. Although Nash has done some related work (on the measurement problem).

My bad -- I was only half-listening to the PBS show

about the mathematician's son that explained this. I got Everett and Nash confused.

NYC

Out of curiosity, are you a native of NYC? I guess I never noticed. Only been there once, but you're kind of help fulfilling the stereotype of the ultra-provincial and insular New Yorker with that last explanation. ;)

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Ouch!

You're not talking to Sarah, are you Damon? Because if you are... You're a little bit wide of the mark ...

yup--

born in The Bronx and lived here my whole life--didn't even go away for college. I'm far more a New Yorker than an American (or a NYer first, then American)--a lot of us feel that way, i think. : >

In our favor, we're smart, fast, tough, tolerant, productive, wildly and unremarkably diverse--and manage to mostly live and deal with each other without killing each other, are the media, finance, fashion, etc, centers for the country and beyond, have contributed far more to the nation for centuries than we get back--from labor laws to rights to arts to communications, etc--and the whole world always wants to come here and be here, in good times and bad, which reinforces our pride, because we are the city and make and remake it fresh 24/7/365.

(how's that for local pride, huh?) : >

and we're not unfoundedly smug like Bostonians (who really are provincial and live in a town that thinks it's a big city that matters but doesn't at all). ; >

(i do travel a lot--but almost always to other countries and not to America--and i don't drive, so a lot of America is not at all accessible to me anyway.)

check out our next generation--

Wonderful photos!

What a great idea! I often have wondered how many countries are represented among my students.

We have such richness here in NYC, why would we ever want to go anywhere else? ;)

you noow yawrkers are so cute!

well, our beaches are prettier...

actually, i loved, loved, loved nyc when i visited a few years ago [and yes, amber, boston does seem provincial by comparison]. i spent a lot of hours wandering around the city just talking to people. contrary to what i'd been told [don't talk to the natives, don't make eye contact with them], everyone was friendly and kind and helpful.

philadelphia otoh, that's the coldest city i've ever visited, personality-wise.

Amberglow got it, Lambert.

I don't always reply with the reply option, as I don't have my settings set up in a threaded form (I despise the threaded form). Usually, though, people get it.

BTW, I was just kidding. The most provincial and arrogant, and self-important people I've ever met are from Chicago and LA, and particularly the former. Sorry for those from Chicago, but their own self-perception always seems way out proportion with the reality of the place. Really, I could go on all day about Windy City citizens, but I'll just end that they make New Yorkers look humble in comparison. At least you guys have something to be arrogant about. :)
