Yep, that's your "emergency" right there in section 503 of the Senate's version Hank Paulson's trillion dollar giveaway.
Jeebus. Couldn't they at least have exempted something with a real public benefit? My suggestion:
SEC. 503. EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN LATEX STRAP-ONS DESIGNED FOR USE BY HAWT LESBIANS WHEN PEGGING THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY.
Or words to that effect. Readers, I'm sure you have your own suggestions.
UPDATE And what the fuck is this:
The Senate bill also would:
Make permanent authority for undercover operations.
Make permanent authority for disclosure of information relating to terrorist activities.
None of the really weird shit is online -- not the wooden arrows, not this. The PDF only goes up to page 250, and all this is beyond that. WTF
?
UPDATE More on the wooden arrows, and other ancillary pork, some of which is even not ungood, from from Bloomberg. Emergency? It's exactly like the CEOs screaming NOW NOW NOW and not wanting to give up their pay. Now it's our elected [cough] representatives.
UPDATE What Sean said:
And on that note, I had a conversation with a Thai man yesterday and he said," Your government is worse than mine now!"
Mind you, this is the country whose Supreme Court fired the Prime Minister because he had a cooking show. A cooking show?
How pathetic.
Indeed.

You've Got to be kidding me
When I heard the Senate was going to attach tax exemptions to this I couldn't believe it. The bill was horrible as it was, then they go add an extra big "fuck you" to it, and for what? Because they can. I can not possibly see how the house passes this. Tax exemptions?! Really?!
Tax exemptions. Yes, really.
So let me get this straight.
The highly unpopular Administration came in wanting $700B to buy junk, and everyone's jaw dropped to the floor.
Two weeks later, they got that plus new tax exemptions for pet causes.
Okay.
well done lambert
I was hoping someone would go thru the bill and find stuff like that, I don't have the heart to.
I can't claim credit for that
because, interestingly, those clauses aren't in any of the versions I've seen online; I got the heading from the invaluable McClatchy and then Googled on the text. All of the versions, including CR's, only go up to page 250, and don't include this clause, which is on page 300. So it looks like some kindhearted individual might have given CR the image of the page that they've posted...

The vote was an ungodly 74-25.

My Dog
Both Cornyn and Hutchison voted Yea? Holy sweet mother of teh baby jeebus.
I know people all across the nation are angry over this bill but these two Senators must either (a) be abso-freakin-lutely clueless as to how close to pitchforks their constituency is or (b) be receiving some tasty get along to go along juice.
As I've previously mentioned, I live in TX-22 and all the nutters I talk with every week are *this* close to oiling up their AR's.
It's an exagerration to say they'll revolt physically but it is no stretch to say that the brainwashing has worn off and they have reached the end of their rope.
Yes amberglow
The Senate just gave 700 billion of our money to Wall St to turn around and pay off all the Yes votes. So in effect, we have paid Congress to f*ck us over. Sweet. Satan himself couldn't top that scam.
I Just Emailed
Ron Wyden to thank him for his Nay vote and reiterated my support for HOLC or HOME or whatever the name du jour is. He may be sympathetic since his chief of staff was chair of Hillary's campaign in Oregon.
Yes, Stabenow Voted Against This!
If there is anything I can take anything positive away from it's that my rather moderate Democratic senator was one of the few to vote against this shit. This was an unexpected surprise. She hinted that she wasn't comfortable with this, but I was sure she was going to capitulate to Democratic leadership.
Stabenow's going to get a nice letter and phone call from me, that's for sure.
page 300
all the pages are here, but the table of contents doesn't list everything.
so, this is why we were supposed to swallow the house version, eh?
I did scroll to the end....
... and it ends at page 250 with "TATETAXES.—The cost of real property’’, and "

Yeah, And Who Was It That Asked Who Has Leverage?
Really, they don't just get the 700 billion dollars, they get that and then some as if 700 isn't gravy, enough.
Hell, why don't the Republicans just ask that Bush be installed as president-for-life, because Dems would almost certainly give that to them if it meant passing their bill.
Room for everyone's pet cause
except Hillary's: home ownership.
What the heck kind of lobby do the wooden arrow producers have? Were taxes killing off the industry? Do you think it was some sort of dare? Some Senator said, ha ha, I'll vote for the bill if you put in an exemption for wooden arrow shafts, never dreaming Reid would take them at their word? I'm really curious about this.
Nevermind
I found the answer by rousing myself to google "wooden arrow shaft exemption":
Formal Name of the Bills?
What are the formal names of both the House and Senate bills on this?
I ask, because you can look up bills at:
House Site:
http://clerk.house.gov/
Senate Site:
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legisla...
look whats going on overseas...
"France heaped pressure on Gordon Brown last night by floating an ambitious plan for a ¤300 billion (£237 billion) bailout fund to rescue crippled banks across Europe.
As the world held its breath on the fate of America’s $700 billion bank bailout plan, President Sarkozy was seeking the backing of European leaders for his own lifeboat."
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/bu...
And this...
"Britain’s economy today appeared to be edging closer to recession after Ford introduced a four-day working week at one of its production plants and UK manufacturing shrank at its fastest rate since the last slowdown in the early 1990s.
Ford blamed the “tough economic climate” for a decision to cut 17 working days at its transit van plant in Southampton between now and the end of the year."
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/bu...
Ford's cutting payroll over there.
Are you sure you don't want this now?
Of course John Hinderaker over at Powerline.com wants the House to vote 'no'. He's a good conservative. Does he share your views? Check this out: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives2/2...
Strange bedfellows????
Good night all!!!
peter
Not A Surprise
This is Sarkozy we're talking about, another conservative who ran on railroading unions and making France's economy more like the United States'.
How's that working out for you Sarko?
what's your point, peter?
this bill is a "good thing?" seriously, make that argument, i'd love to see someone try. for the laughs.
wooden arrows. we're officially beyond irony, surrealism, pathos, and absurdism. anyone care to try to label this strange land in which we all are? my vocabulary is failing me.
Gimme an "R"!

Well, our emperor did eat cake and play a six-string fiddle while a major city drowned.
1 syllable. Sounds like "Home".
I don't think you need a lifeline for this one.
of course they don't want us to read it all
what, did you think your Lawgivers had to answer to you, Little Person? the mighty workings of the Imperial Senate are over your head, so don't trouble yourself about them. The Emperor and His Sithlord assistant will give you what you need, and what you deserve if you keep asking all these questions.
Corner Stone, I live in TX-19, and the only hope we have left
is that Randy Neugebauer holds the fort.
That is so scary to contemplate I can't believe I typed it.
AR's are kinda thin on the ground here -- most of those folks left when the airbase shut down. But the shotguns and thirty-oughts are getting cleaned and sighted in. Just sayin'.

I tried to access it just now, and could not. The server is still crashing. Better to contact your rep. by phone now, or stop by his/her district office.
Was Just Able To Email My Rep.
Who voted no last time and I asked him to vote no again and support a HOLC-style bailout that will work to solve the real problem and help real people.
well Tx-22
Your's and President Bush's Democratic Congressman voted for the 'bailout' bill on Monday.
Talk about strange bedfellows, the folks over at Wizbang.com have done some heavy lifting for you. Take a look and call if you like...

Progressive Democrats and conservative Republicans joining forces. Who would have thought it?
peter
Nick Lampson is the D in TX-22
And he voted No on Monday IIRC. Although that's not to say Nick isn't a very conservative D, because he definitely is. He has no choice if he wants to remain in office. TX-22 is a +15 R congressional district.
IMO, he is also naturally conservative as well, not just forced to be. He's a pretty nice guy though and is passionate about education so he's not all bad for a conservative D.
Lambert: hunter orange is your FRIEND until mid-April
just sayin'.
Oh, and that tax exemption for wooden arrows?
Don't laugh. That might be how you harvest the very small game off which to eat next year.

Blackmailing the House
is the point of the senate bill. Since the house must originate appropriations bills, the senate took a pork barrel bill they had already passed but that the house had already turned down. Then the senate attached the bailout to the pre-existing stinkpile. That is what passed. When I looked at the gov site last nite for roll call votes the only reason I found it('cuz it wasn't labeled bailout) was that it was the only bill sponsored by Dodd voted on Oct. 1.
THAT was the closed (to senate staff) strategy our fearless leaders came up with the night after the House defeated the previous bailout bill. It's an end run around the House, pure and simple...to the tune of an extra 150 billion or so in debt.
Chances are practically nonexistent that the House can stand up to this kind of political pressure, but I'm still calling my Rep to hang tough with his original Nay vote.
well
Would you ever think the reason Frank and Dodd have been working on this so hard is the fact they took so much money from these people? There are so many quotes on You Tube with them saying there's no problem with Fannie and Freddie. Protecting their interest, the interest of those who contributed so much to their campaigns? They attacked the regulator more than protect America in any of those hearings held in DC? Here's a WSJ piece for your pleasure.

"The U.S. and foreign policy authorities seem to be clueless about what needs to be done next. Maybe they should today start with a coordinated 100 basis points reduction in policy rates in all the major economies in the world to show that they are starting to seriously recognize and address this rapidly worsening financial crisis."
