You should now see cute little icons over the boxes where you've been typing in text.
If, for example, you select some text and click the B (bold) button, the selected text will be surrounded by bold tags. If you select some text and click A (anchor, leftmost) button, you'll get a little form to fill in, with the selected already in the "link text" blank, and you can paste the URL into the "link URL" blank, and then click OK, and your link will be marked up correctly.
There is also a preview button (the eye) at right, which is quicker than the Page preview button. Click once to show the preview; click again to return to the editing box.
So, this may be easier for some people; the tags aren't hidden -- there seems to be no reliable editor, still, that does that -- but at least you don't have to type them in.
And this may make the issue of unclosed tags go away, since the buttons put in both start and end tags. OTOH, for unknown reasons, new issues may crop up, in which case this may turn out to be a bad idea.
Let's be bold and experiment!
NOTE I experimented with an image button, but, unfortunately, it's not as easy as it should be. See here, for the process. The bottom line is that if you use FLickr, you'll find it easier simply to paste the HTML Flicker generates into the post, rather than put pieces of Flickr's HTML into the various blanks in the little form. Sorry.

Hooray!
Thanks Lambert! :D The url tags are especially welcome since posting links always gave me the most work. This all very much rocks.

Yeah yeah, it helps people who don't know HTML. But still...
I don't like it
I am a keyboard oriented person, I've been typing since I was 3. I jump around web pages all day, w/out hardly touching my mouse. Now, I can't "Tab" from the subject line to the comment body, w/out hitting the HTML buttons first. It takes less time to go to the mouse and move the cursor manually. But that sucks, cuz I have to take my hands off the keyboard, something I would rather not do.
:(

What email client do you use?
Just out of curiosity. I was stuck on Pine until about 2005/2006. Even though I had Gmail, I'd still use Pine. Alas, I finally switched completely over completely.
I've got a few
I use Gmail for personal, the one from my ISP for business. Never even heard of Pine.

I love Pine!
Used it for years, 'til I switched to brower-based.

Keyboard thoughts
On the bright side, all the buttons are accessible from the keyboard, which is new -- CTRL-I on the Mac is italic.
I'm not sure I can control the tabbing order, though.

I have no idea
I use XP at home and at work. IE(the latest.0) is my browser at work, Firefox at home.
Yes, I'm a PC. If they could be moved down with Input Format, that would be awesome, and if not, I'll overcome. :D
My previous job was as a news monitor. My fellow monitors and I lobbied long and loud to get keyboard linked hot keys to control the viewing software(which was highly classified). That job is what led me to blogs, actually. I began to notice the media corruption in the lead up to the Iraq war, and started to look online to find out more about the stories, since the early morning news programs I monitored had mainly become engines of advertisement, used to hawk products and services.
Any ways, two years of doing that job, along with my current job, whose software runs off an AS400, have ingrained my fingers a typing habit that is hard to break. But, improvise, adapt and overcome is my motto.

change! si, se puede!
which WYSIWYG editor are you using to do this?
It took me weeks to get somebody to explain how to get FCK editor to work on my prototype of the new Black Agenda Report. This looks good and simpler. What is it?

The editor is...
bueditor
FCKeditor, no. TinyMCE, no. TinyTinyMCE, no. Tried 'em all. This is the first one I like.
NOTE This is the Drupal version, though. I don't know if it works on other platforms.

Whoohoo!
Really, really Whoohooo!
Now, how do we underline and put things in color for even more emphasis?
Thankew, thankew, thankew.
This is great.
And I agree with tnjen about the url tags -- makes things much, much better. The preview function is equally awesome.
Thank you!
I just dropped by this thread to say, thanks.
grrrrr
this place still doesn't like blogger images. whyzat?
i've never got used to doing images here as it is, but i've got scads of images from all my blogger blogs i'd like to be able to use, instead of having to move them all into a photobucket account first.
otherwise, i like. thanks!
