... this campaign should be decided on July 1 why?
Because Howard Dean says so?
Howard, Howard....
Show some leadership on disenfranchising FL and MI. Then we can talk.
About 470 superdelegates are publicly supporting either Obama or Clinton. Dean said he wants those who haven't declared to ``make their wishes known well before the convention'' is held Aug. 25-28. That way the party can focus on the general-election campaign against Republican John McCain, he said.
So, we're having a convention why, then?
Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense to make sure there were 527s attacking McCain relentlessly, right now? Surely, we don't need a nominee to attack McCain; that's just specious.

Dean is hoping that the situation will
be resolved so his screw-up won't be so obvious.

It Doesn't Matter Who a SD Declares For
They can always vote differently. Sure, most won't, but they can, making any artificial deadline ridiculous because it's unenforceable.
Dean's problem is that, while I believe he wants Obama to be the nominee, he also fucked up in using the nuclear option against Florida and Michigan. So now the surest way for Obama to become the nominee, excluding Florida and Michigan, fucks over Dean because it's likely to hurt the party. He wants the SDs to save his ass and avoid a convention fight that was completely avoidable, either by only sanctioning MI & Fl 1/2 delegates originally, or showing some leadership and trying to pressure the campaigns to agree to a re-vote. Having failed to show any leadership on any issue (and having Donna Brazile out there pissing away both of their credibility), he's now stuck. And, frankly, he deserves to be. In what should be a good year for democrats, his decision could de-legitimize the nominee (whoever it is) and cost the democrats two large states in November.
Whatever happens, these folks have to go. I know a lot of people like Dean from 2004 and while I do think he's contributed to the democratic party, the one thing he's supposed to do as DNC chair - put Dems in a position to win - he's utterly failed at.

wow
I'm like Nostradamus. I've been suggesting this for awhile now. It'sa the only thing I've heard that makes sense in the last few months.
Intranets
I'm sorry, but what is it you have been suggesting? Dean's suggestion or a convention fight? I'm afraid I've lost the thread somehow.

McCain for the win!
(From Talk Left): Dean says the only way MI, FL will be seated is if both candidates agree on a plan (Ha!) or after the nominee is chosen.
Brilliant! I mean, if MA--the bluest of states--is already a toss-up (according to SUSA) we can only imagine the kind of fun we'll have with this 48-state strategery.
Just yesterday, I changed my registration from Democrat to undeclared. By next week, even my Democrat-or-die family will be doing the same (In addition to being staunch believers in, uh, democracy, we have family in Florida). And none of us will send a damn dime to the DNC. This is just sickening.
I'm not changing yet
I still have a chance to vote for Clinton!! And I've finally decided, that since there is a snowball's chance in hell of my state going for Obama, I will not vote for him, cuz obviously he don't want it. I will vote in all downticket races. I hope to be able to bargain by vote against Obama with a purple stater who will, but doesn't want to. Kinda like what was tried with nader in 2000.

Get the supers on record
I think it is a smart thing to do. Get as many super delegates to state publicly who they support.
People have to focus on beating McCain and since the candidates won't come together to do this, it's the only way to win in Nov.
I still hope to vote for Clinton
@Aeryl: I'm just so disgusted at the party
leadersFuckers Extraordinaire that even a Clinton nomination won't sway me back to the party. This is much bigger than any candidate. Even if Bill came over to my place with a basket full of goodies begging me to return, I'd slam the door on his face. We need to clean house. Completely.Post-convention group hug
So, Lambert, on August 29th all will be well with the Democratic party and we'll be ready to take down McCain?
After five more months of Obama/Clinton bickering and posturing...
After 10s of millions more of dem donations are spent for a nomination...
After the media hypes up the best political theatre of the century; a reality show with all the drama, conflict, suspense and emotion a network could dream of...
After half the party is devastated that their candidate lost...
It all goes away on the 29th and the focus is on the general election? An election less than 10 weeks away.
10 weeks for Obama/Clinton to recover from a convention fight, win back the other half of the party and and fight McCain for the electoral advantage.
Don't you think this would handicap the party quite a bit. So little time to build the necessary narrative(s).
FDR didn't have 24/7 TV/radio coverage and the internets informing (using the term loosely) and entertaining the public with every nasty little tidbit of the politicking. A convention fight now has entirely different consequences.
Yep. Since Obama can't close the deal, he should quit
Immediately.
Alternatively, as BTD proposed, he should stop obstructing the FL/MA redo, and both candidates should agree to abide by the popular vote. Cause not disenfranchising two major states might make this "Oh, for the good of the party" crap just a little bit more than, well, opportunistic pearl clutching....
