Single payer silence will be broken in the House, 6/10 at 10:30 AM

My local single payer activist sends the following:

The Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee of the House Education and Labor Committee will hold a hearing titled “Examining the Single Payer Health Care Option” on Wednesday, June 10th at 10:30am in 2175 Rayburn House Office Building.

You may be able to watch via webcast.

She adds:

Contact C-SPAN and let them know we would like them to carry it. C-SPAN's Main Number is: (202) 737-3220.

U.S. Rep. George Miller (CA-7) chairs the subcommittee that will be conducting the hearing and is a co-sponsor of HR 676, "Expanded and Improved Medicare for All." On 6/2/09, another co-sponsor was added--Marcia Fudge (OH-11)--to bring us up to 78 co-sponsors.

Please contact your U.S. Rep., tell them you are a single-payer supporter, and let them know you want them to attend this hearing. The toll-free number for the Capitol switchboard is 1-866-220-0044.

If you don't know who your U.S. Rep. is, go to www.congress.org to find out.

For those of you who would like to attend in person and can make the trip to D.C., hearings are open to the public. Just make sure you get there early, so you get a seat.

They are no longer pretending we have no right to speak.

We are winning.

we are winning

I just hope we can step up the pressure. Thank you Baucus 13, I think the arrests really switched the dialog.

I think we're going to need more....

... since it's a Civil Rights issue.

happy dance indeed

not sure about the winning part yet, since this isn't one of the committees under whose jurisdiction hr 676 would fall, but it's a good start.

i've been reading about various efforts to get the congressional budget office to score single payer bills. apparently it's rangel [chairman of the house ways and means committee] we should ultimately be pressuring to get hr 676 scored [and also apparently schumer is the one on the senate we should be pressuring [or not] to get single payer scored there too] so maybe this is an alternate avenue for getting that done.

if i understand the process, bills are not usually scored [for how much they will cost/save the govt] until they get out of committee, but that any legislator can ask cbo to score a bill at any time, whatever its status.

Scarecrow at FDL posts statement of principles from Progressive

Caucus on health care reform. They state what they will demand of a public plan.

Good luck and we've got your back (and backup), Congressional Progressive Caucus. Public program is the backup to single payer.

The NYTimes will have this article on Page A1 tomorrow, Obama to Forge Greater Role on Health Care.

...Mr. Obama has grown concerned that he is losing the debate over certain policy prescriptions he favors, like a government-run insurance plan to compete with the private sector, said one Democrat familiar with his thinking. With Congress beginning a burst of work on the measure, top advisers say, the president is determined to make certain the final bill bears his stamp.

“Ultimately, as happened with the recovery act, it will become President Obama’s plan,“ the White House budget director, Peter R. Orszag, said in an interview. “I think you will see that evolution occurring over the next few weeks. We will be weighing in more definitively, and you will see him out there.”

Whether this is a good thing or not will remain to be seen, but I think calls to the WH are in order. Lots of calls for single payer.

Scarecrow had seen the NYTimes article, noted that the reporter couldn't find any single payer advocates for quotes. Oh, my. All the government approved news that's fit to print....

Obviously a bunch of idiots who won't vote,

according to Obama activists.

Good photos, thanks.

Not quite everything they said

They said their tools were better. Let's not be afraid to learn from them.

Learn from whoever we can,

absolutely. I'm just not convinced about one letter = one rally. That's why I asked for commentary from people with experience on that subject.

what John Conyers said

I forget how he phrased it, but along the lines of "everything is everything", to indicate that every bit of effort would move this forward and was a necessary part of winning.

I think the demonstrations are essential, because it makes it that much harder to pretend we do not exist. The arrests were essential, the conversation has completely changed since the arrests. Letters to the editor are essential, it remains our best way of spreading the word. Blogging is essential, it makes us visible online and helps to spread the word with a speed that would not otherwise be possible.

All of this is necessary.

Everything is Everything

I think this is a great point, DCblogger. There are many ways to facilitate our message being heard.

So little time left

- so I've made a resolution to do one small thing every day for single payer.

Today it was phone calls to all three congresscritters. Tomorrow it's emails.

CSPAN

I couldn't get through to the CSPAN number tonight, but found the following from their webpage:

"Viewer Services (viewer [at] c-span [dot] org): Questions about our schedule, how to buy DVDs, and for any other general comments about C-SPAN"

I got through this morning

and the receptionist guy was already tired of hearing about it (yay!) and said it is "under consideration." I guess we have to make him tireder.
