So, which Republican will Obama ask to replace Tom Daschle?

CNN crawl [and now Pravda]: "White House: Tom Daschle asks President Obama to withdraw his nomination for health and human services secretary."

Of course, we all knew Daschle was going down when he got, from Obama, what in baseball is called the "vote of confidence."

I guess the more serious version of my question would be this:

Will Obama go right, or left? Toward single payer, or away from it?

UPDATE From Pravda, above:

But Gibbs struggled to explain why Daschle and Killefer were forced to withdraw their nominations, but not Timothy Geithner, who had failed to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes as well.

Because Geithner goes golfing with Big Money, silly! Why else? Priorities. Meanwhile, as Bowers points out, Gates rolls merrily along. I wonder why?

i win! finally, at long last, I BEAT YOU!!!1!

sorry, i just had to express a childish and petty emotion after long months of not being able to post on a topic before you got to it. ;-)

See my comments below...

and much earlier than your diaries in the comments of a previous diary. So HA! lol jk

HA! Great headline.

I understand his "ethics" nominee has withdrawn, too. For tax problems!

Shainzona

I looked on the front page...

and the Daschle news wasn't there so I posted it. Git back to the front page and there were 3 in a row... I deleted mine.

Don't make it Dean. He wants the Obama approach too:

Excusing the pun in light of the recent troubles in the auto industry, Dean said the reform doesn't have to be a Cadillac; it can start simply. "It's a false debate whether we should have a single payer or not. That's not the issue. What matters is, how [reform] evolves. We have to proceed at a pace of comfort for the American people."

Americans want single payer NOW!

I doubt it would be him, anyways, given the rift between him and Obama's inner circle.

Good call on Dean

Though I have slightly more confidence in Dean's ability to listen, because I personally experienced it. Don't know if he's right for the job, though.

If Obama were really honest about

a team of adversaries? Kucinich or Conyers comes to mind...

Bingo!

Comment of the day IMO.

Heck, comment of the year. (The year's young yet.)

We can't afford not to have single-payer!

On this one issue...

It's the truth. It would probably get the yahoos like you and myself off of Obama's back, and they might actually get a decent deal on the table if there has to be a compromise.

Connecticut Man got there before either of us in comments

But my snark is fully weaponized, so I get to the submit trigger faster ;-)

I didn't realize this was a race?

Next time I will go straight to a post. heh If that was really the case I had it up on my Blog a minute into the "Newsflash"... lol

I have disliked Daschle

intensely since his days as milque toast senate leader. Recently I was accused of sarcasm (imagine!) by a friend who requested that I confine my emails to she and her SO to cute animal pictures. She said they firmly believed Obama needed to be given a chance to pull this country out of the ditch and needed no disparaging words from me to intrude upon the KoolAid haze. Sigh....

This blog helps my sanity...just gave the hamster some kibbles...thanks.

Oh, geez!

I was just kidding this morning about him being next.

What a disaster (not that I was keen on him anyway).

Dems: snatching defeat from the jaws of election victory. Heckuva job.

Arrrrrrgh!!!!

Why doesn't Obama just ask Rush Limbaugh?

Surely, he can recommend the most suitable Republican.
Or maybe Grover Norquist. He's probably not busy.

Come together at The Confluence

Let's hope it ain't Dodd ...

'cause evidently there's some hinkiness in his financial history too. Oy.

Dennis the K would be good. But why not the guy who authored HR 676?

Kucinich and Conyers

are the original sponsors - with a couple of others... Did Conyers author it on his own?

Machiavellian...

Another brilliant machiavellian ploy by Obama -- this one aimed at balancing the budget by nominating tax cheats for jobs in his administration, getting them to pay up, and then dumping them and nominating the next tax cheat!

Let's Play Obamachiavellian...

By naming people (or relatives of) that Pres. Obama owed politically, and then having his own bulldog (Mr. Rahm) bite them, means he can now look those high-profile big-time players in the eye, shrug, and say, "Well, golly, Bill/Tom/Ted, I tried." Debt paid. And now he can name some people who are so far Left, it looks like Right to us common folk.

Good one, Paul!

BTW, anyone remember Team Obama always crowing that one of Obama's strengths was that he was the best. judge. of. character. evah? Oh, and that Hillary wasn't fit to be president because picking Solis Doyle and Penn were the worst. campaign. moves. evah?

Really, doublethink isn't an OFB bug, it's a feature.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

But the question remains...

...what about the Clinton Library donors?!

On a serious note: according to the (current) front page at HuffPo, Baucus wants the job. Considering he pushed for universal mandates, I'm hoping he wouldn't be as bad as Daschle was. I don't know if he'll be selected though.

Oh, and you, too, Davidson!

Tons of great laughs, in this one.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Day-um, this is a funny thread! n/t

.

He's not a Republican, but he is an NRA member

How about Michael Moore?

Senate Finance

If Baucus is Sec of HHS, Rockefeller takes over Finance. I can't tell how, if any, that changes the dynamics of single payer.

ohio, you are very funny.

the list of "far left" appointees so far:

1.

...i don't expect that to change any time soon.

But if you're a techie....

0.

And so much more expressive!

Well

he's certainly qualified having practiced medicine. I never understood Daschle. IMO, it was nothing but pure cronyism.

Here's Ezra Klein's list of suggestions--leads w/ Podesta.

Dean not mentioned, except in comments.

What effect does Judd Gregg have on healthcare legislation if he's at Commerce?

Dean is not for single payer

though I have a little more faith that he'll listen.

That's a discouraging list Ezra's got. Good thing we got Hillary out of the way at State, eh?

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." -- Mahatma Gandhi

Dean, did someone say Dean? Yoiks! C. Everett Coop is my vote.

Coop would complete the neo Reagan administration Obama's building.

Great comment over at NoQuarter re Daschle's demise:

"All I have to say (right now…still need coffee) is that the Clintons paid their taxes!"

I love this job!
