Woman haters in North Dakota this time. Once again, it's draconian:
Bismarck, ND) The North Dakota Senate will hear a bill that will ban all abortions in the state. HB 1466 would ban abortions in North Dakota and impose criminal penalties on women and their doctors.Sarah Stoesz, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, is monitoring the progress of the legislation. “North Dakotans deserve to make these personal, private decisions free from government intrusion,” Stoesz said. “This bill attempts to substitute political opinion for medical judgment and endangers women’s health and safety in the process,” said Stoesz.
The bill would allow the Attorney General to implement a ban on abortion regardless of the status of Roe v. Wade. Performing an abortion would become a Class C felony in the state.
“HB1466 is well out of the mainstream and is more extreme than the ban that was rejected by the citizens of South Dakota less than six months ago,” Stoesz said.
Get ready to send a few emails to various tourism officials in the North Dakota gummint. Jeebus, these fuckers never give up.

A good place to be . . . FROM
I remember wack-jobs protesting at a conference on doing someting to curb violence against women (held at the UND campus in the mid 80's). At that time there was still an abortion provider in Grand Forks, long since forced out I guess, but there were always hollering picketers there harassing anyone who went into the building (it had a convenience store). And Grand Forks was the 2nd most open-minded town in the state, after Fargo!
Maybe the lingering wreckage of the state economy after the farm crash made this worse? Or maybe fundies moved in by the military (ND, if it sececeded, would be the world's third largest nuclear power, did you know?) chose to stay and take up politics.
elliot: two words for you- white babies
as i've noted before, you almost never see these sorts of draconican forced-pregnancy bills in states where lots of brown people live. KS, SD, ND...there's a pattern here.
in the midwest, i've noted an interesting trend. PP style clinics are easily found in the cities. i had no problems seeing a sliding scale clinician when i lived in south side chicago, and if i'd needed an abortion, it was both relatively cheap and i had a range of options (RU-486, surgical, etc.)
but get in the car, and drive out to the all-white lands (not counting migrant labor, of course) and what do you see? billboards and "counseling" clinics and church signs, all proclaiming "mommy, don't kill me!" with pictures of cute little white babies.
i have always viewed anti-freedom actions thru the lens of race. two points:
1. if anti-choicers really cared about "life," they would all have one or two black and brown "difficult" to adopt children in their homes. oddly, the vast majority don't. there is a nice movement to "counsel" white women to
sellgive up their children instead of choosing termination of pregnancy. well funded too.2. if anti-choicers really cared about life, they'd show their faces at some urban clinics, and pay for those "counseling" centers and billboards in the hood. again, it's interesting that i've never, ever seen one of those in the 'hood. or in spanish. or even with an image of a nonwhite baby.
no, it's pretty clear to me that after controlling wimmin, the anti-choice movement is about making sure whites remain a majority in this country, by force if necessary.
North Dakota is not alone
You may not know about another outrageous bill pushed by the affright-to-lifers in Florida. While this one doesn't ban abortions outright, its implications are terrifying.
See my post of March 12th.
"Forced pregancy" is the proper frame
Do not accept the pro-life/pro-choice verbiage or dichotomy. It's been a loser for us.
No authoritarians were tortured in the writing of this post.

i have to retire soon, so i can't go look just now. feel free to register, and post on the subject here at correntewire.
yes, lb. you are correct. "prochoice" and "prolife" are bullshit labels/frames.
"forced pregnancy" and "patriarchal women haters" are much, much, better.
Half these people think they're the next John Brown
Really and truly--you would have to google the words "Civil War" as often as I do and read 20-30 pages deep (in News, I mean, not regular web) to see it. Constant references to abortion as the equivalent of slavery, and the crusaders for its abolition the moral (and to be remembered historically as) equivalents of Frederick Douglass and the unknown workers on the Underground Railroad. They don't even cite the Baby Jeebus as much as they do historical figures. Some of this writing is undoubtedly cynical efforts to provide a non-fundy cover for those of other motives who seek the egoboo of being on the Right Side of a Great Historical Trend, but a lot of it is just deranged babble that wouldn't pass historical muster in a 5th grade Lincoln's Birthday essay assignment.
The other half of course are in it for the money, selling what CD correctly notes are absurdly overpriced perfect healthy white babies (those defective in any way, including improper paint jobs, not wanted and available at considerable markdown). If by some wand-waving miracle there was an actual cessation of all unwanted pregnancy tomorrow they would switch without missing a beat to, I dunno, peddling gray market kidneys on the transplant circuit or something.
And of course there's yet another half that is just woman-hating, sex-hating, life-hating loons with an obsession with exercising power over others.
I'm willing to concede at least a tiny fraction of the first two groups listed here are to some degree good people at heart, prone to absolutism but otherwise sincere. That last group though....shivers.
(And if anybody wants to quibble with my math, what with the three halves and all, shaddap. There's overlap between groups. "Columns may not add up to 100% due to rounding", yeah that's the ticket.)
