Spitzer should not resign until Diaper Davey Vitter resigns

Why should he? It's all a non-issue for Republicans, so why should Democrats be held to a different standard? So the so-called Justice Department can carve another notch on the bedpost for taking down another Democratic governor, like they did Spiegelman? Forget about it. And Jeralyn raises the key issue for all the moralists and high horse experts out there:

[Spitzer laywer Michelle] Hirshman -- a former assistant U.S. attorney in Manhattan -- also argued that if federal prosecutors brought charges against Mr. Spitzer, they would be required to similarly charge the nine other unnamed clients> in a federal complaint unsealed last Thursday, to avoid what's known in legal circles as "selective prosecution." None of the other nine unnamed clients have been charged in the case.

Bingo. Shouldn't everybody be calling for all 9 to be prosecuted, not just Spitzer? And Ted Haggard too, for good measure? Why aren't they, I wonder?

At most, here's what Spitzer should do:

Issue a statement that he's going to resign at some future date.

Then walk it back.

Just like Larry Craig!

NOTE I wonder if Rove took a look at Spiegelman's bank accounts. He was certainly looking for compromising sexual material.

and you wonder

Why is anyone surprised when Congresscritters cave over and over again.

Imagine what the IRS/phone logs/bank treatment that they worked Spitzer over with would do to their bad behavior.

What is most shocking to me is that Spitzer lived and breathed "follow the money" how the hell could he be sloppy enough the get pegged here. That is some high tech monitoring.

Pegged?!

Tee hee...

Structuring

Well, resign he did. Regarding the federal charges: it seems to be structuring, in which he tried to hide reporting certain transactions. The money, not the prostitution, is the key to this legal case. However, it still seems like a rather extraordinary case.

The suggestion that this was driven by an IRS inquiry and involved a bank might heighten, rather than allay, concerns of a politically motivated prosecution.

All of these facts are consistent with a process which is not the investigation of a crime, but rather an attempt to target and build a case against an individual.

Oh, and finally: I'm squealing with the name "Diaper Davey."

ZOMG, another keyboard gone!

Warn me so I can put down my coffee, wouldja?
