Oleaginous, dead-eyed Mike Huckabee blames HuffPo, The Clenis, and everybody but himself (for release of rapist Wayne Dumond at the behest of Clinton haters who had taken up Dumond’s cause. Dumond went on to rape and kill again, after multiple letters, to Hucklebee, warned he would do exactly that).
What a surprise! Funny thing though:
Huckabee’s claiming that he had no formal role in Dumond’s release, and that he exerted no behind-the-scenes pressure on the parole board. Yet the substance of today’s HuffPo story comes from one Olan Reeves, a former Huckabee aide, who confirmed Hucklebee did that very thing.
Now, in the clip at the TPM link, Hucklebee says HuffPo (actually, Murray Waas) distorted what Reeves said, and all you have to do is go to his site and you’ll see a statement from Reeves to that effect. My transcript:
HUCKABEE: HuffPo does’nt want to give the whole story.
You fight it by hoping people will do a little research on their own …. Mr. Reeves is outraged today because the Huffington Post totally misrepresented and just utterly distorted his statements. We have a statement from Mr. Reeves that will be on our website today and I think you’ll find out that this agenda of the Huffington Post is outrageously misleading.
I’m on the site now.
No statement from Reeves.
Nada. Zip. Zilch. Just a day old transcript of Hucklebee’s last set of denials. This is inexcusably bad staffwork; never would have happened with the Bushies, Bless Their Hearts
. If the guy can’t get a war room set up, how’s he going to run the country?
Again, you really have to think it’s only the thin-mess of the Republican field—Rudy imploding, Willard Mitt pandering, Thompson falling asleep, McCain flexing his jowls—that’s letting Huckabee get any traction at all. Maybe he could get some help from toe-sucking Dick Morris, his latest consultant?
NOTE Sheesh, this is such a simple issue, right? Just release the records, and have done with it!
UPDATE At last Hucklebee’s slow-moving staff has gotten it together and posted on the site.
1. Although Huckabee claimed on the teebee it wold be a “a statement from Mr. Reeves,” Mr. Reeves name is not on it; it looks like a rehash of past statements prepared by anonymous staffers.
2. Xan is right: The smoking gun is the letter Hucklebee wrote Dumond; with that letter out there, Huckabee didn’t need to do anything else. (Worth a post, Xan).
3. Josh Marshall is right:
as a practical matter, I think Huckabee’s defense on DuMond is so damning as to be almost indistinguishable from the charges leveled by his critics.
Huckabee’s defense:
n the midst of a general discussion about the Governor’s general philosophy related to clemency, one of the Board members asked the Governor about the DuMond case and his intention to grant clemency (which was public knowledge due to the notice of intent.)
The Governor responded by stating that he believed the facts warranted his decision to initiate a notice of intent. As has been reported, he added that he believed DuMond had gotten a bad deal from the justice system.
And why did Hucklebee believe that? Because he believed a bizarre conspiracy theory put together by a gaggle of professional Clinton Haters, instead of the warnings from the letters of women Dumond had already raped.
Still sucky staffwork, say I. I mean, that’s like Karen and Karl, Bless their hearts, coming out a defense that Bush couldn’t have served out his term in TANG because he was drunk at the time.

Front page
is it bad staff work?
or just blatant lying on the theory that no one important will call him on it?
Two good theories!
Isn’t wonderful to have all choices be good?
Where I’m coming from on this is a recollection of Dukasis concession speech vs. Reagan’s victory speech, during that run. It seems clear to me from the details that one problem Dukasis had was that he ran from a provincial power base that was simply outclassed. Reagan, by contrast… Well, he had the total support of the VRWC
, so of course he looked great.
My point is that Huckabee, in a way, is like Dukakis (in that regard): Provincial. Try poking round The Arkansas Times.
We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan
Jesus saves the day
I still think old JC might rise once more to get the Huckster off the hook. Just because this guy has sent more people to death than… even “W”? Ok, not counting soldiers, sent more convicts to death than anyone.
Jesus believe in the death penalty and he also would have given the rapist another chance to rape again.
Why can’t we follow JC’s lead and give IheartHuckabee a pass?
Intra, could you make that "Jesus comes...
to save the day”? That way I can sing it to the old Mighty Mouse theme and imagine a nice visual of the Lord soaring through the sky with one fist outstretched and a cape over his tights. I mean robe.
Sigh. I wish somebody would put those old MM eps back on. Given the drivel Adult Swim has gone to running late at night (Astro Boy for gossakes? And anything from those morons Tom and Eric or whatever their names are? Shudder, revulsion) they could at least give us American-made old crappy animation and help with the balance of payments problem.
But ahem, back to the Huckabee thing. The Holy Hand Grenade of Arkansas is sitting there in plain sight, folks. Pin already pulled and count on hold at two. The HHGoA is the letter Huckabee has readily and repeatedly acknowledged sending to Dumond, saying that “parole would be the best way for him to begin reintegration into society” or whatever the phrasing was.
WTF
IS ANY GOVERNOR DOING SENDING SUCH A LETTER TO A PRISONER? Any prisoner, but particularly one in on those charges? What other prisoners did Hucklebee write to? All of them? I doubt this. So if there were others, on what basis were they selected for this attention?
That letter is the smoking gun as it were for the whole bullshit of the argument that “The governor does not pardon people, the parole board paroles people.” If a prisoner walks into his parole board hearing waving such a letter from the goddam governor for chrissakes, what message does that send to said board? No message has been given directly from Huck to them, but does this letter not say as plain as day “Let this pipple go”? Wink wink nudge nudge, know what I mean, say no more?
Hammer on that letter. Don’t be distracted by the bullshit about releasing records. It loses time and chances are good they’ve been doctored anyway. This is a vastly WORSE action than anything Dukakis did in regard to Willie Horton.
