Cursor: “’Impeach Impediment’ Air America’s Rachel Maddow wonders why the Democratic leadership thinks “it’s a bad idea to spend hours of prime time on the floor of Congress reminding the country that mister 11 percent approval rating is a bad guy of whom they disapprove and who they would like to see held accountable.” (Note to Rachel: A president can nominate a vice presidential choice, but the Senate still has to confirm that person. Don’t forget, Mike Mansfield told Nixon that Gerald Ford was the only Republican the Senate would confirm - he had no choices. I think Snowe would be a good choice.)

Somebody must have changed his meds; or he’s been staying up late, watching the latest torture videos that Admiral Mike sent over. Or planning for war with Iran. Or all three! Who says the man can’t multitask?
CBS 13 video here:
A news crew was taping a cabinet meeting at the White House as the president was giving a briefing on the California wildfires.
The news crew caught Cheney as he appeared to be nodding off.
Or maybe Shooter just finds human suffering dull (at least the kind he hasn’t personally caused). Read more

Yeah, it’s like Kremlinology back in the day, isn’t it? Where a bunch of dour-looking** hatchet-faced old guys all in ruthless bureaucratic infighter costume would line up on the missile-reviewing stand in Red Square, and we’d try to figure out what was really going on by who was smiling, and who stood next to who. Good times. Why is that?
But let that pass. CIA analyst Ray McGovern’s hat is making that krinkly sound: Read more

Well, that’s beyond shameless, isn’t it? Even for Ben Bradlee’s child bride. Maybe that’s why she’s got a yen for Fred? Anything, anything at all to evade accountability and preserve the “Our Town,” the Beltway as a Republican fiefdom. Her and Dean Floater, the gaseous turd. Anyhow, here’s the excuse:
Cheney is scheduled this summer for surgery to replace his pacemaker, which needs new batteries. So if the president is willing, and Republicans are able, they have a convenient reason to replace him: doctor’s orders. And I’m sure the the vice president would also like to spend more time with his ever-expanding family.
And who would replace Cheney? Read more

Brigham Young University officials were probably just thrilled spitless to be able to book Dick Cheney as the commencement speaker at this year’s graduation.
Some students—yes, dammit! At BYU!—were less than thrilled. So less than thrilled that in the midst of finals, settling their tabs at the bursar’s office, preparing dorm rooms for human habitation again, taking finals and looking for post-college income, they are trying to throw together a Counter-Commencement for those who are disinclined to breathe the same air as ol’ Crashcart.
Details over at the House of Orange, with numerous links of substantiation and, ahem, dignified cough and hand extended palm upwards, a button you can click to chip in a little bit to help them pull this off.
UPDATE: Ya did it, folks. The diary was posted circa 3:56 p.m. in whatever timezone dKos runs on, and four hours later it was announced that every dime these kids needed had been covered. Sometimes you folks just get me all teary-eyed, dammit. Good job one and all. Read more

Doctors have diagnosed a blood clot in Vice President Dick Cheney’s lower left leg, AP reports.
“Vice President Dick Cheney made a visit to the hospital today after experiencing what his office called some ’discomfort’ following his recent trip overseas,” the Associated Press reports. “A statement from cheney’s office said an ultrasound revealed a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or ’blood clot’ in his left lower leg and added his doctors will treat him with blood thinning medication for several months.” Read more

Rocky Mountain News:
Attorney David Lane said that on June 16, Steve Howards was walking his 7-year-old son to a piano practice, when he saw [vice-Resident Dick “Dick:] Cheney surrounded by a group of people in an outdoor mall area, shaking hands and posing for pictures with several people.
According to the lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Denver, Howards and his son walked to about two-to-three feet from where Cheney was standing, and said to the vice president, “I think your policies in Iraq are reprehensible,” or words to that effect, then walked on.
Ten minutes later, according to Howards’ lawsuit, he and his son were walking back through the same area, when they were approached by Secret Service agent Virgil D. “Gus” Reichle Jr., who asked Howards if he had “assaulted” the vice president. Howards denied doing so, but was nonetheless placed in handcuffs and taken to the Eagle County Jail.
Well, look, let’s be reasonable here, people.
It wasn’t as if Cheney had the guy declared an unlawful combatant, right?
And heck, he wasn’t even tortured! Read more

And we do mean Too Rich, on every level.
Or, as Max Speaks: “The Vice President is bullish on America. Not.
And as the Kiplinger Report analyzes:
Vice President Cheney’s financial advisers are apparently betting on a rise in inflation and interest rates and on a decline in the value of the dollar against foreign currencies. That’s the conclusion we draw after scouring the financial disclosure form released by Cheney this week. Read more
